Starter Solenoid issue
« on: April 28, 2009, 06:24:54 AM »
Has anyone had this problem?  I put a brand new solenoid on my bake.  Bike fires right up the first time one push of the button.  After the bike has been started a couple times the solenoid stops working.  I can use a screw driver across the termnals and the starter works so starter is not the issue.  My neutral diode is bypassed so thats not the issue. If I let the bike sit over night then try it again it works fine. All wiring test fine.  Just stops working if I start the bike 4 or 5 times.

Any ideas?

What bike is this on?  There have been some members recently with a specific bike that have had similar issues.

Go here and turn everything off except the starter circuit. It will help you understand how the power gets to the solonoid to make it pull in. You can then take a piece of scrap wire and ground out the terminal that the starter button grounds. It also will allow you to see if the hot line is energized. You will see that there should be power to the hot side all the time the switch is on. All the starter button does is complete the ground. Dan

Have tested the wiring and the button and it grounds out correctly.  Like I said it works when it works but after firing the bike a couple times it stops but all the wires test the same.  Brand new after market solenoid from PartsNmore.com.

During starting it drops to 12 for a split second because the bike starts right up, then back to 13+

So, I guess you are saying that the solenoid doesn't even click sometimes.

The solenoid needs Battery POS connection on one small wire and Battery NEG connection on the other small wire to actuate.  If it isn't clicking, then it isn't getting those conditions met.

Good luck!

The conditions are getting met.  Just tested both wires.  Must be a faulty solenoid.  Thats the only thing left

Hi kemper,

There has been several riders complaining about this issue.  I don't think it is as straight forward as it seems.  I would not toss your solenoid yet.

I don't know electrics well enough to point you to the answer, but I would caution you about blaming your solenoid exclusively.

As I said, I do know this issue has been discussed several times here....... I am not sure about definitive answers......... some replaced wires and cleaned connections, bought other solenoids (including people who bought used ones) and the issue was resolved.  But, they did so many things, it was hard to determine what fixed the issue.

Just my 2 cents...... ;)
