What do the other guys in the shop think? Are you tight with these guys where you could all approach your boss and say "hey we want a safer work environment." One would think that at this day and age that bosses would want to keep their employees safe and working. Wouldn't it cost him more if something really  bad happened to you, ie loss of limb or life?

Sucks to be sure.

Every OSHA whistle blower I know has been screwed.

Yeah sometimes they recover thier jobs and lost wages...but only after prolonged agony and legal wrangling.

Your boss is unscrupulous and generally sounds like a piss poor person.

Start looking for a new job immediately

When you find one...then call OSHA.

Bear in mind its alot harder to find a job with a Disability or parts of your body missing.

In the mean time...be very careful.

I think this us the best advice you will receive here. Read it again. I would suggest you look into Transit if you have metal working skills. The Gov't will be pushing money in there. Get your application in now.

They are all too scared to say anything. They are all providing for a wife and kids so I don't blame them. Plus they don't do what I do. I am really the only one at risk.

I have made up my mind. I am talking to Gary tomorrow. I am going to fight the fight. You guys are right.

I have busted my butt since the age of 12. I have the right to demand saftey. He is a rich @$$ that has never worked a real day in his life and does not care about our saftey. Too many people gave up a lot so that I would have the right to stand up for myself in the work place and I am not going to dishonor their sacrifice by letting this jerk off get away with this crap any more.

If the others would go along, you could always get a private meeting with the business agent of your local machinists union.
This sounds like a place that NEEDS union representation, and is a perfect example of WHY unions are necessary. Just an alternative
suggestion :)

I hear everything you are saying Caave.I have been there a few times and sometimes you have to bite the bullet to make the buck.As you get a little older(wiser),you start to put a bit more thought into what you have to go through to make the buck.I am 52 and have been through all kinds of sh!t and sh!tty jobs but I'll tell ya one thing.......I have never let an employer off the hook for unsafe conditions. One trucking job I had kept sending me out with a tractor pulling doubles that had a shifted rear axle on the tractor(dog trackin' POS!!!) After telling them 2 days in a row.....I came in day 3 and there it was.....loaded up and ready to go.I took it out and stopped at a pay phone and called my wife.I had her meet me at a scale shack on the highway.I took all my stuff outa the rig and put it in my car. Then proceeded into the office and got the CHPer to come out and look at the truck. It was red tagged so that company was in deep sh!t. They had to get another truck to pull the trailers (full of late shipments) and a tow truck for the tractor.
At that time,I didn't give a sh!t because I was young and jobs were not that far and few between like they are nowadays.
I cringe when I think of the wreck I coulda had if that axle crapped out. SAFETY FIRST!!!!!!!!....life is precious!!!

Man whether you you get bounced or not for opening your mouth REMEMBER one hand for the boss one hand for your self, you don't do any body any good crippled or dead and yeah if he does fire you make sure you hit every safety department with a complaint and maybe spread the word on the net about the unsafe conditions so that someone else has a chance to avoid the place.

I'm actually the only machinist there lol. Otherwise I like your idea. I wonder if there is a wheel refinishers union.

Sea, what can I say? A pretty girl minus a limb or two is still a pretty girl.

MrBreeze, I hear you loud and clear man. I am going to stick it to this guy. I've put up with this crap for two years. No more.

Cave, I just read this entire thread.   I gotta say that i am glad that you have decided to take responsibility for yourself.  You are the only person that can say no when you have to.  Your safety depend on your own decisions.  If you lose your job then what?  Who cares?  It's just a job.  If you are good at what you do, then take it to someone who cares and work for them.  Stand up for your right to not get hurt.  A job is just a job.  It is not your life.  I know the importance of making dough, but I also know the importance of having all of your fingers and eyes.  Blindness is forever and missing fingers are forever.  Job are temporary; all of them.
I am missing part of my index finger, have nerve damage in my hand and a very nasty scar on my right arm from a mistake.  It will haunt me for the rest of my life.  Many times I have wished I had made that correct decision only seconds before I sprayed meat all over my work.  It was not employer negligence that caused my injury but it was my decision.  You have that decision to make right now.  Make  the right one, no matter what.  If you lose your job, it will not be the end of the world.  It will open doors that you never knew were there and you will end up better off than you are now.
It takes a man with a lot of balls to do what you have to do, but think of your self as if you were inside a burning airplane.  Jumping and pulling that ripcord will not only take you away from that fire but you will land somewhere completely other than where you are.  As humans, we tend to not want to rock our little boats that we live in, but I promise you that when you actually do take control of your life you always end up in a better boat.
F**K your boss.  He doesn't care about you or your well being, which is obvious from the exploding lathe, and he will continue on until someone gets dead or hurt.
So grow a pair.  Call OSHA and ask for a safety inspection.  You already have one bit of evidence from the lathe incident and your missing fingernail is a bit more.  Take pictures of improper equipment and talk to only the people in the shop that you can trust.  Get them on your side and make a stink.  Document all of your actions on paper with dates and times.  The more information you have about your situation will empower you to make good things happen.
The most important thing to do is keep your body safe.
"Sure, if you don't want that bike in your backyard, I guess I'll take it."  "I'll probably just scrap it......"

Caveman. Further thoughts, I used to work for a tool & die maker in Covina California who supported me, a couple of engineering students, a part time machinist and a wife, himself and 3 kids in a fairly decent life style all in one of those little industrial garages, he was a sharp cookie. A few of the pearls of wisdom was always think what you are doing, never do by hand what a machine can do faster and better, and if it's not safe don't use it, fix it first, it will save time later on. when I worked there I stopped thinking one day and ran my hand through a surface grinder, not badly but enough to require a bunch of stitches on my index finger, he took me to the local hospital got me looked after and sent me home, next day did I get reamed, not about getting hurt, but about not thinking what I was doing ( I pushed towards the work as opposed to pulling away from it ) and I didn't blame him, I still don't, he wouldn't suffer an unsafe condition around any of the machinery, so if he could make a living, a good living, being safety conscious the twit you are working for is some one you don't want to be around, he'll get you hurt.
