Thanks, guys.  I'm really enjoying the motor.  The combination of the 836 Wiseco kit, ported head and cam really wake up the bike.  That combined with stripping weight where possible.  The bike wants to lift the front in second gear.  The new lighter springs still provide a fairly stiff front end but are an improvement (the GL front is sprung for a much heavier bike, so when you bolt onto a 750 it's a good idea to get the lightest springs).

As mentioned in another thread, my 750 stranded me (actually twice), when the bike stalled and would then re-fire only to rev to 3500 and stall again.  No loose wires, plenty of fuel.  No starvation issues either -- no clogs in gas tank vent, petcock, fuel lines or carburetors.  Note: the bike fired up fine after sitting overnight and failed after running approximately 100-140 miles.

Well, after much ruminating and trouble-shooting, I believe that the culprit is my Dyna 2000.  I am replacing it with a regular Dyna S unit and then I'll run the piss out of the bike and see if I get a similar failure.

I'm entertaining the idea of selling the Nine Lives bike to make room for my K2 (Bionic Mongrel) fuller tilt restomod.

If anyone is interested, let me know.

Unfortunately, there is only so much garage space, and I can only ride one bike at a time.  My bikes are not museum pieces but riders, so I want them to be in running order.  That can almost get to be a chore when you hit a certain number of bikes.

The nice thing about the 750 (especially with a ported head, cam, 836 Wiseco kit and CR29s) is that it has plenty of torque and cruises comfortably at higher speeds without being buzzy.

Hey Don.....it's usually our wives telling us that!   Could it be your frustration with the stalling issue that is prompting this?
I had a similar issue with my first 550F.  I restored it and installed a Dyna on it. It died on me once on the way to hooking up with some guys for a ride. Tried everything to get it to run right including removing the Dyna. I said that's it, sold it and bought a 750!

Ol' Nine Lives is in the fab and paint shop for some tweeks.  My seat was binding on the frame rails so it's getting a slight fit mod and paint re-touch where it chipped a portion of the seat paint.

Dyna S replace the Dyna 2000.  Now to see if that cured the gremlins.

Hi Don

I've been admiring this bike for some time, just beautiful work man.  And though I trolled through the thread I couldn't find what you used to paint those cases that awesome bronze color.  Reminds me of the magnesium cases on the 60s Honda factory bikes, which is what my 550 is being made to look like.  I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know what that paint is and if you did anything particular to get such a great result.  I've used VHT pretty successfully in the past, just not sure what color you chose.  Thanks, great, great build!

Retro, I'm 5'9 155lbs. The thing is I grew up mainly on a 400 4 and owned a RD350 for a few years. I ride bmx bikes for a living and they are tiny in comparison to most bicycles. I found the 550 to be the uppermost size motorcycle I feel comfortable on. I like to be able to throw the bike around. I've ridden a 750 plenty of times. (My pop owned one) and it just feels too big. Everyone is different though. It's what you know.

Don's bike temps me though. It's a true beauty.

If only I were big enough to feel comfortable on a 750. Sigh.

How big are you Trad..?  I'm 5"10 and 150 pounds, I've had a couple of smaller bikes, but mainly  ridden 750-1100cc bikes of all sizes and weights, I consider the 750/4 a small bike ....

Jared,

Imagine your 550 not straining in the slightest at highway speed as you drop a gear and disappear.  This motor pulls like a train.  Yes, she is heavier than the 550, but she lost many lbs on her Restomod diet.  This bike is really well-suited for open roads and higher speeds.  In comparison, my stock-engine 550 is buzzy when I'm keeping up with higher speed traffic on the freeway.

She's getting some touch ups for shows and possible listing.  Let me know . . .  ;)  The Acewell speedo can also display KPH!   ;)

Oooh nooo, Don.  I can't imagine you selling your signature piece.  Following in Tieg's footsteps?  You should have no problem attracting admiring buyers.  Cheers!

Jared,

I know.  It's been a long and strange trip with this bike.  I love it but I am trying to make room for a new project -- one that will best this one.  It's a matter of space, upkeep of another bike and keeping domestic tranquility.

She's unofficially for sale for the right buyer and price.

Hey Kevin,

If I had land, lots of land under starry skies above, and a boatload of time to ride my bikes, I would keep her.  Let me know if any of your crew has any interest.  I want this bike to go to a good home.

I still go back and look through older pictures of this build. You did such a nice job with it. Sorry to see it up for sale but I hope you find the right buyer for it Don.
