Went to the Vintage Bike OC monthly meet-up in Huntington Beach today. Lots of cool vintage bikes, including a Norvin, lots of Triumphs a pair of CBXs and a few CBs. About 130 bikes ridden in. Really nice people. I got a HUGE surprise by winning their ride in contest. Wow!!

Great looking bike, I can't believe how much patience you've had throughout the process dealing with vendors. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the digital gauge it seems out of place on a bike that has a vintage look to it.

Thanks, guys. It was a really great group. No poseurs or attitude. There were some amazing restos including an Indian Scout used in the Bejamin Button movie that I thought blew my bike away. Luckily the Scout was a former winner.  All riders, too.

I've looked at this bike many times as a resource while trying to figure out the long term plan for mine. Never noticed this before but I love how the lines flow from the tank all the way back to the seat. Really nice. For a while now I've thought I would keep my bike with the stock seat so I could ride two up with my wife but after my first safety class today (I finish tomorrow) I now think I might end up doing a solo seat.

Thread jack: Riv, best to get plenty of riding experience as a solo before you commence carting your bride about. Short, casual stuff is fine, but you still need lots of seat time before you take on the added dimension of a passenger.

If modifying your seat plans to a solo effects that restriction, then do it, I say. I tell my boys that they need 5,000 miles of riding experience (and I gauge check them) before they get a 2-up seat. And I still ride with them on short area rides to monitor their progress.

I'm a bit over-protective on riding behavior as I strongly believe 99% of all bike accidents are the fault of the rider (either too much speed, poor decisions, poor technique, not being "seen" or just plain old "I'm in the right, they'll stop mentality"). Doesn't matter if you're "right" and dead...

Sorry, guys, sermon over.

It is a beauty of a bike, Don and so delighted you're finally getting lots of trouble free riding on it! Now pull a Tweakin' and sell it  :o

Cal's advice is spot on.  Get lots of seat time before you tackle 2-up riding.  It is like riding with a 115 lb or so sack of potatoes.  You want to be as sure-footed as possible before you have a passenger to accompany you.  Imagine if you had to swerve or make a panic stop with your wife aboard.  That would be enough to contend with if you are inexperienced and riding alone.  Seat time (with good habits) will create safe riding instincts to keep your skin on your body and not on the pavement. 

It's hard enough for me to get my better half to ride pillion.  If I were a newbie, there's no way in hell she would get on the seat.

Enjoy the heck out of that bike!

Sell the Nine Lives bike, Cal?  Are you interested?  Someone asked me this weekend how much I had into the bike.  I really have no idea, nor do I want to tally up all of the build costs.  I know I will never get what I put into it, if I sell it. 

But, if you know someone who really wants to buy it, there's a price for everything!  Regretably, I think I will plan on selling my RC51 instead.  I'm wondering how longer I can hunch over a superbike as I get older, and it numbs my wrists on any appreciable long distance.

I just figured Tweakin had set the new mode of getting it running great, every conceivable upgrade, then selling it below capital value, so you'd be next! Now, if you need to move that outta your garage to accommodate some space, I'd be proud to make sure it gets ridden properly, maintained perfectly, and travels the show circuit here to keep it "fresh" and "hip". Let me know, I'll send a trailer (got one going by Trad's place to pick up my $100.00 bike from him).

I resemble that remark!

On a side note, I've spent the weekend tidying up the re-wire on my 550 and finally on Sunday afternoon, took the wrenches to my R90 build. Got that all the way down to the last assembly but awaiting an exhaust wrench. The bike came apart unbelievably easy. Not a rusty screw or bolt or nut. Dropped the harness, bucket, electronics, shocks, fenders, and gaiters to the shop today in fact. They're buying them from me and giving me shop credit for some work they're going to do. Swapping spit, so to speak...

Waiting on machinist to get his g-damn 3 axis up and running (still) to fab me some parts. Cheap bastard, won't pay the $4k to have a service tech come out and fix it... Making me wait instead!

Haha, busy guy over here. I still think we should pick a date and meet somewhere in the USA, and test driver each others bikes. Wouldn't that be awesome? I think so!.......... I'll even trailer in from up here in the great white north.

Oh I completely agree and I'm glad I took this class. I really don't want her on it at all so all the more reason to change it. I'll keep it as is for the summer but that will be on the list to address in the fall. I passed my class today and got a helmet on the way home. Now I need to get to the DMV and then get tires.

Wow, just found this thread. What a story and a fantastic looking bike to boot! I've gotta ask about those rotors were they for the GL model? I have a extra stock calliper for my K7 and really would like to do the conversion. I'm a newish rider and these 70s brakes are a little scary!

I'd start by adding a stainless line to the factory setup.  I've seen the difference such a move makes on other bikes and believe it will be enough to improve the braking on this bike without going overboard. 

Now if you still want the double calipers for other reasons, by all means.

Thanks for the compliment.  The front end is from a 1976 GL1000.  I swapped to the GL1000 front for two reasons, improved handling and braking.  I had problems with my dual disc 750 front end.  The GL1000 offers a turn-key solution that simply swaps in place (calipers, rotors, forks, triple trees, etc.).  I originally had the stock rotors, cross-drilled by "el cheapo" one of the forum members.  I happened to get a great deal on EBC rotors, which are floating rotors and are much lighter, so I upgraded.  My master cylinder is not stock either -- but a modern Brembo radial master cylinder.  It stops MUCH better than any stock 750 and better than a dual disc 750.


Prez1967 makes a good point.  Many members are fine with the stock brakes.  At a minimum, I would recommend cross-drilling and resurfacing your used rotor, rebuilding your master cylinder and replacing your old brake lines with new braided stainless steel lines.  These upgrades will definitely improve your braking performance.


IF you decide to upgrade to a dual disc set up, I would recommend a GL1000 front end swap OVER a second 750 brake caliper and rotor.  Fitment of the second disc and caliper can be challenging to get the spacing right, and requires you to source longer bolts to mount both discs to the hub.  The GL1000 front offers some substantial improvements:  stronger brakes (bigger pistons) and improved handling (37mm fork tubes instead of 35mm).  It is a plug and play solution.  While you have the front end off, you can also replace your steering bearings to roller bearings.  There are lots of 75-77 GL1000 front ends available (if you buy the entire front end, it will be cheaper than buying the individual components), and it simply swaps into place.

Initially, I used the stock rotors, which I had crossdrilled by member el cheapo.  Not leaving well enough alone, I upgraded the rotors to EBC floating rotors.  They are lighter and are floating discs (as opposed to the stock discs), and I got a great deal on the rotors.

Nice one. I've already installed new taper bearings. I might leave the GL front end for now as I just had my stations re chromed at quite a cost! Would the EBC's just swap in on the 750 front end also?

Neither the GL1000 stock rotors nor the EBC rotors for the GL1000 will fit on a 750 front end.  The offset of the rotors for the GL1000 is larger (further distance from the hub) than the 750.  As a result, the GL1000 rotors will not line up with the 750 calipers.  Also the GL1000 rotor is slightly thinner (not so much of a factor).

EBC does make a few rotors for the 750 models.  According to the Dynoman website, EBCs Model MD1062 is specific to a 750K7-K8 and 750F (75-76).  (http://www.dynoman.net/brakes/ebc-apps.html)  I wasn't aware that there was any difference between the K0-K6 rotors and the K7-K8 -- and I am still not aware of any difference between any of the rotors for the K1-K8.  The F rotors for 77-78 are definitely different from all others.  When I was looking for one about five years ago, I could not find anyone stocking these rotors so it was a moot point.

Note: EBC only seems to make these rotors for the Left Side.  If you ever went with EBC rotors in a dual disc 750 set up, you could (in theory) use a LS on the right side, but the cross-drill pattern would face the opposite direction and look wonky.
