what causes arcing at points?

i think i bumped my points setting by mistake and so i set the gap at .330 mm and under throttle with points cover off i can see arcing what up and how do i set the points at their proper spot it is a 78 cb550k please help need answer.

There will always be a small amount of arcing and is not an indication of improper gap.  Excessive arcing though indicates possibly bad condensers (those small cans wired to the points).

would your point gap affect driveability causing some stumbling?

Yes it could, because the gap effects the "dwell angle" which determines how long the coils are able to charge.

can you explain how to set them properly and where to make sure the #1 cylinder should be i got screwed up when i did a leak down test i took off the point cover and i think i bumped something because 2-3 wasn't even opening or closing so i tried to set to .330mm but do not know if i through something off timing?

Do you have a shop maual?  The procedure is explained there.  It involves a litte more that I could explain here and my mind right now is off due to moving between So. Calif. to Las Vegas.

i have a shop manual but only tells the procedure for setting the point gap but not how to ensure i'm starting from the right place to begin with

Really?  It does not describe how to rotate the engine to the "F" mark for one pair of cylinders and then the other?
