should i cut my pipes? my brain might pop
« on: April 28, 2009, 06:46:29 PM »
Having a hard time deciding on what to do with my ugly mufflers. kind of want to cut them off and just have the
straight pipes but in reading related posts i get a lot of information pro and con.
What i gather is that it creates a lean situation so you have to change main jets, you are damaging your engine, loss of power unless your full throttle, loss of back pressure, you have to increase air flow, it's loud and attracts attention, it looks kind of cool, and so on

so what i was wondering is can straight pipes be modified to eliminate all the negative stuff
as long as the modification doesn't involve attaching a muffler to the end of the pipes :)

What do you have for pipes? 4 into 4? 4 into 1? What do you have for a bike? 750? 650? 550? 500? 400?

You have asked a controversial question, as you have found in your research, that really has no straight (no pun intended) answers. One option to think about is that there are baffles available on the market that simply slip into the pipe. Would they work to solve the "problems" and still have all the "benefits" ? Not sure, but it's something to think about.

4 into 4 on a 78 cb750. the baffle idea was my original thought, would that solve my problem? how does the length of the pipe come into play?

Adding baffles to a slip on section would create more backpressure, how much you need would be dependant on your setup.

  I've seen where guys have screwed in washers to a bolt in the pipe to make a form of a baffle .

the pipes on my bike now aren't stock and i'm sure they aren't worth anything. on a tight budget too.
so i am trying this on the cheap.

Hahahaha.... Cute.

 ::)

What I did was punch out the old rusty baffles, weld up the holes in my exhaust and then welded in my own baffles... Sounds MEAN.
