34 minutes and out for the season
« on: April 29, 2009, 05:54:56 am »
So after finishing my cafe build (chop, cut, rebuild). I took it out for it first voyage and to go get the NYS inspection. In the turn lane, wait for my turn light. Take the turn on green, guys blows the red light and thats all she wrote. A guy in a mini van tboned me. Not sure how fast he was going, but my bike does not look good.
Me on the otherhand.. Bumps, scrapes and bruises all on my right side and foot. Fractured a bone in the front of my neck (thankfully didnt puncture my esophogus).
I will know more about the damage to the bike, but all of the gas and oil were left on the floor.
And when I say 34 minutes, I mean I left the shop at 5:01 and made the 1st call after getting hit at 5:35. Kicker is the inspection place was about 200 feet from where I got hit.
Fun times. I think besides the pain I am emotionally freaking disturbed after putting 6 months of my personal time into building the bike and now that went to SH!T.

This sucks beyond measure!  Glad you made it through with a pulse, that neck bone thing is scary.

Good on you for contacting the lawyer.  Go after this guy with a vengeance!

Hang in there buddy, and if there's anything we can do to help with the bike, I'm sure all you have to do is say the word.

Man, I'm sorry you got hurt.
I hope that driver has insurance you can get help from, but more importantly, I hope your side and neck are going to be OK!  :o

Sure glad you made it out relatively unscathed.  Bikes can be raised from the dead, but people usually can't.  But it does suck terribly that you put in all this work, and only got to enjoy it for 34 minutes.

This is also why I usually wait a couple of seconds before going through a green light.  If you were in a car and got t-boned, chances are pretty good you'd make it out okay.  If you are on a bike, it's usually game over.

Sorry man, good to hear you weren't severely broken.

Make sure to tell his insurance company your bike was worth near $10k for all the hours you put into it.   ;D ;D ;D

I'm glad to hear that you're OK, but you need to sue the $hit out of this guy. Not only is there physical damage, there is the emotional damage caused by seeing all of your hard work dashed onto the asphalt.  Will the fact that the bike was uninspected have any bearing on the insurance claim?

Oh Man! Ride to live, live to ride... live to ride again through the grace of god sometimes.  Was that a left turn?  I've been giving extra time lately whenever I turn left, no matter what I'm driving or riding, somebody always does the unexpected when I'm turning left.  Insurance companies know that and will try to screw you, good luck with the legal matter, but most importantly good luck with your physical and emotional recovery, you had blood sweat and soul into that build and it's gotta hurt bad.  I'm so sorry for your loss.

O man, glad to hear you're ok.  Totally sucks about the bike.  I was following your gold-leaf stripe thread day-in day-out.  Awesome work you did on that, and on the rest of the bike.

You are fricken lucky to be alive!

Document everything, the one with the most paperwork wins.
The Ins will try to screw you. Hopefully there is enough coverage (settlement over medical costs) or the person at fault has something ($$) or you will be out of luck.
Can't get blood out of a rock. I went through this last year.

Good luck and take even more pride in your next build. :)

Good to hear you are alive cafe, my condolences on the bike.
Rest up and get ready for court. Make sure you get a copy of the accident report and be sure the cop didn't crew any details up.
