Sucks to be hit by an auto driver. I've been there, done that, got the ambulance ride. Worst for me was getting back onto a bike. It will have been 15 years ago this June and I'm still not fully recovered mentally. I guess that means that it permanently altered my thinking/feeling when on a bike in the city. Unfortunately, it was more fun before. However, riding is rewarding enough that I'm still putting two wheels and an engine between myself and pavement, but I tend toward country-side rides vs city commuting.
Losing the bike hurts whether you got 34 minutes or 34K miles, but there's plenty of bikes out there. We only get the one body/mind/life.
Also, I'd now try to not be too rabid with the legal thing. I was all fired up too but I regretted it later. I wish I had handled things differently in that regard.
