1972 CB750K-->How does the gas tank come off ?
« on: October 27, 2005, 10:15:30 AM »
Hello ,

In my never ending quest to learn more about my bike , I want to pull the tank to see what the wiring looks like under it.

How is this accomplished ?

It seems , from what I can see , their is one main rubber mount in the rear of the tank , towards the front of the seat , and one smaller
mount on each side , on the front of the tank , towards the neck of the bike.

The Chiltons service manaul says to lift up on the back of the tank, but I dont see how this is done without
ripping the rubber mount in the process.

I would rather ask , then break something.......  ;D

All help is appreciated as usuall.....

if yours doesnt have the rubber strap that goes under the top frame tube, then you can lift the back of the tank and pull straight back a little it should pop right off

DUSTERDUDE--->

No strap, just the big square rubber mount in the rear , and two "circles" on each side , towards the front.
I can get some decent movement out of the tank , but it will not come off.. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Does the main rubber mount come off with the tank , or does it stay on the bike ?

no the rubber piece stays on the frame.the tank should be laying on top of said piece.yours might just be a little stuck on the round doohickies in the front or could be hanging on some wiring or something underneath

did you shut the petcock off and disconnect the fuel lines...sounds stupid I know but I can't tell you how many times I pulled the tank on my cb750 only to hear a rubber band like snap and then be standing in a puddle of gas.

I noticed your tank is rattlecanned black, maybe the paint is sticking to the rubber (happens a lot on spray painted bikes) in the front. Basically you lift the rear of the tank and slide it back to remove. Once you do it once you'll know how to do it forever, it's that simple.

Hey Pro-----> I have had my gas tank off many, many times on my 74 CB750 - - sometimes out of need, sometimes for the same thing that killed the cat - - curiosity.

Starting with the obvious, open up the seat.  Push the gas tank as far forward as you can, rocking it back and forth (with a left to right or right to left motion is what I mean).  When you have gone as far forward as you can, take hold of the rubber mount at the rear of the tank and get your fingers between the top portion of the rubber mount and the gas tank flange.  If it has been a long time since it was off, you will have to work pretty hard to get between the metal and the rubber.  The rubber must remain seated on the motorcycle frame.  The exteneded flange of the gas tank must come free while pulling back and up on the rubber while pulling up and forward on the gas tank flange.  It will rotate upwards on the rubber ball type mountings at the front of the tank.  When the rear is free, you pull up on the front mountings and it will come off.  It can take quite a pull to get the front mounts free after the rear portion has been released.  The biggest danger is when reinstalling the tank watch out for electrical wires and cables to the handlebars.  They get bunched and pinched very easy.  Also, do watch your fuel lines.  I hope this helps you.  jaknight ~~~   :P

Thanks for all the advice.

We have a 60 degree day here in Chicagoland , so the gas tank removal will wait , because I am going riding  ;D

Thanks again !
