Have you ever been to an auto auction?
« on: April 30, 2009, 11:03:32 AM »
I desperately need a reliable vehicle for cheap. With the economy in the toilet there must be some really good deals out there. I did some researching but anything on the internet worth looking at requires a membership fee. I know that you can go to a police auction and not be a dealer. Is it worth it? Does anyone have local Southern California info?

one of my buddies bought a Willys at a cop auction - full of holes from when they blew away the PO. otherwise it can be anything they find on the side of the road. no info available and some don't even let you try to start it until it's yours.

maybe try cl.

Dont know the laws but check the local want ads in the paper. The wrecker yards have them from time to time here. It is a crap shoot but you might get what you need.

I have a buddy that buys cars at auctions and flips'em, also my Dad has been to several. Almost all of the ones that they have been to have let bidders check out the vehicles before bidding. I have heard that some won't let you check out what your going to buy, but why would anyone want to even do business with anyone that operates in that fashion? You shouls call the bus. that's running the auction to see if it's run that way.

Check the local Craigslist sites.  There are also a couple Craigslist search engines that let you search multiple locales at once.  That's the way I found my 400F.  I ended up driving from Indiana to Georgia to pick it up.  You can probably find something closer in Cali.  If cheap and reliable is what you're looking for, I'd suggest a 90s or early 00s Cavalier.  I had one that ran to almost 200k without much more than normal maintenance and the new owner is still driving it.  Mine had a 5-speed manual and got around 30 MPG combined regularly.  I'm sure Civics are probably readily available and get pretty good fuel economy too.  Any other suggestions for him?

Just did some online "tire kicking" on the Cavalier. Some great deals on craigslist. Gotta love crazedlist  ;D Thanks for the recommendation.
