500/4 LH Crankcase cover broken bit
« on: April 23, 2009, 11:38:54 AM »
Hi
Just replaced clutch cable and when I was refitting the LH cover 2 broken metal round bits fell out. It looks as though they are from behind the brass/bronze piece on the adjuster that comes through the case with a large slot for a screw driver. It looks to me that the brass round piece sits inside a collar from which these 2 small round pieces have broken off from. The mechanism that the cable attaches to still rotates and the clutch still works. Don't know if I have described this very well. Does anybody have any thoughts. Is the piece that the brass section sits in part of the adjuster or the case and as everything appears to be working am I best to accept that although damaged the clutch will continue to work.
Cheers Phil

If I understand your question, I believe the piece that fell out is from inside your clutch adjuster.  Not sure if I'm calling it the proper name.  When I replaced my clutch, I had a part that looked like a ball bearing fall out of that spot.  That "ball bearing" is what assists in pushing the clutch lifter rod(?).  I put a little grease on it to hold it in place and put it all back together.

There is a bronze collar around the
clutch adjuster, the pieces probably came from
there. If it is not interfering with the clutch
you needn't worry about it too much.
It may indicate some stress on the adjuster,
so to be safe you should pull all of that apart
and inspect it.

Hi
Thanks for the input. I have sussed it out the broken bits are from the clutch adjuster and I have ordered and got a new one which I am going to fit. Is there anything I should be aware of when fitting the new one?
Cheers Phil.

It has to go in the right way round or no grease will get through from the grease nipple

Thanks Bryanj
I assume it's apparent when I take the old one out which way round it fits. Do you have any further info or pics which would be useful.
Cheers Phil.
