The last one I did I put plastic wrap down over the seating area and a wide area of the bike to protect it from the resin mess. I then formed aluminum foil over that to make the shape I wanted and fiberglassed onto that.
that is what i was going to try. how did it turn out for you? and what kind of supplies did you need?
It was messy and it is a very, very messy job. You can't protect the bike and surrounding areas enough. It worked out great but it was on a bobbed harley softail that I had lowered with a stubby rear fender. I got it covered at a local auto top shop and a couple of my friends say it was the best bike I ever did and I got top dollar for it on ebay. You'll need...
-Fiberglass matting
-Resin
-Hardener
-A bunch of those plastic spreaders.
-A couple boxes of good disposable rubber gloves.
-A nice breathing filtered mask or at least those paper jobbies.
-An angle grinder with some cutting, grinding, and sanding wheels.
-A dremel comes in really handy for angle cutting and sanding hard to get places.
