CB500 pops in and out of gear?
« on: April 30, 2009, 06:32:05 AM »
Hi everyone!
Just finished my rebuild and the bike works fine BUT, when I start to accelerate on 1. gear
it sometimes just pops out of gear and instantly back. Any thoughts..  :o

Worn selector, gear, selector drum or all 3 or broken detent spring (behind clutch basket)
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

So i'm going to have to do the rebuild all over again? Should have done this the last time I got the engine out.. But the gears seemed all right to me so I just put them back in.

You can do the job by removing the lower crankcase only.

I've not tried it but my 500 jumps out of third gear. I have all the bits and just need to get to it!

Take a look at this option:

http://web.archive.org/web/20080129050926/http://www.hondapeople.com/four/cb500/gearshift/500fgear.htm

As you can see, this is an archive as the original hondapeople site has long gone. Shame as it had all the pictures on it!

Start by pulling the clutch cover and inspecting the mechanism behind the clutch, it may be there and that has to come off to split the cases anyway

You can get the individual bits from David Silver, although one of the selector forks is unobtainable and they're not cheap.

I bought a whole gearbox off eBay for £40. Problem with breakers though is that you can't guarantee that the bits you buy are going to be any better than the stuff you take out!
