Picture of 836 slug with rings installed?
« on: October 04, 2009, 10:19:41 PM »
I installed my 836 kits rings per Wiseco, but they are not seating right. Does anyone  have a good picture of a ringed 836 piston so I could verify my work?

Thanks

I dont have a picture to show you. Why do you think they are not seating right?
Can you upload a pic?

Generally,
The correct ring gaps are verified with the ring in the cylinder. Dont assume its correct as supplied.
Once the correct piston ring end gap is achieved, then, outside the cylinder the ring should compress completely into its piston groove without remaining 'proud' of the piston wall. Therefore, the installed ring (when piston is installed) should not contact itself end to end, and the end gap should be no different from when measured on its own inside the cylinder.
There should also be a ring groove clearance between the installed ring and the upper and lower walls of the groove.

If you can't satisfy yourself that these basics apply to your piston/rings then you've probably been supplied the wrong matching parts.

Thanks w1sa. The two strokers I have built in the past lacked 3 piece oil rings, and my old 750 slugs went in the trash long ago, so I had no reference point. You measure end gap in the bottom of the bore, right?

Anywhere in the bore.. it better be straight not tapered, if its used you may want to check in most worn area.

It is A BIG-BORE, NOT a STROKER motor.

You know you put the rings in the bore without the pistons right?
Put them about an inch down from the top.  I hold the piston upside down and push it into the bore to get the ring seated 90 degrees to the wall.  Then measure the gap.

May be obvious but one lad tried to measure the end gap with the rings in the piston and the piston in the cyl.
