Yet another wiring question
« on: May 01, 2009, 02:59:12 PM »
72 CB750K

cleaned the harness a while back and am just now getting the time to put things back together.

Poppin main fuse as soon as I turn the key...pretty much instantaneously.

I cleaned and inspected all connections and the wiring & cleaned and rebuilt handlebar switches

Have a few questions:

1.  As of now - no turn signals (took them off)   wiring for them is still in harness - problem ?

2.  On the starter switch I think I have it correctly - Are the posts marked + - or something else ?

Red/white to rectifier  Blk into harness - to regulator etc.
Red  to fuse then to starter switch

3.  In the headlight bucket I have:
1 single blk wire w/ a single female bullet connector - from the main harness
1 single blk wire w/ female bullet connector that you could plug 3 male ends into - from main harness
1 single blk wire w/ single male bullet connector - from the idiot lights
2 single blk wires w/ single male bullet connectors - from handlebar switches

can't figure out how these fit together -

Any other obvious places I should start looking at as well ?  Any and all help is greatly appreciated.  Getting soooo close

your solenoid wiring is backwards compared to mine.
gotta check my manuals for the headlight bucket black wires....

Found a pic of it before:

that's how it was before....and everyting worked as it should - never had a problem

Any ideas ?

The solenoid won't be your problem, it's just a big relay switch and the connection can be either way.
Disconnect both coil black wires. Disconnect the headlight and tail light. Wire a 12V light bulb (use one of the signals you're not using?) in place of the fuse you're blowing (clip leads are a good investment for bike work).
Now you have a way to test without blowing fuses or melting wires. Without the ignition and lights, there's not much power being used and the bulb should barely light or be completely dim when you turn the key ON. Bright mens a problem, just disconnect wires one at a time until the light goes out. That wire is your problem, inspect the stuff it goes to to find your fault.
If the bulb is dim from the start... connect the tail light and headlight one at a time and see what happens. The tail light and your test light should light dimly, the headlight filament should glow a dim red and the test light should be fairly bright if all is well.

Bodi,  that seems so simple, yet in all my time on this site, I've never come across that.

Thanks, I'm going to give that a try first thing in the morning

Just to clarify this in my box of rocks I call a brain - If I just disconnect turn signals, as long as the connectors are covered,
I'm good right ?   They don't need to be hooked up in any way to complete a circuit or anything like that do they ?
