CB750F Vs Cb900f/CB1100f
« on: August 15, 2012, 02:47:11 PM »
Please do not cruxify me for this question because it is serious.  I used to ride a SV1000s and then I sold it and recently I bought a 1978 CB750F.  I bought it as my buddies were all riding vintage bikes and it was a good project.  Anyway, I love the bike, quite frankly it is better for riding the back roads than my SV100s was as it really does beet suspension wise.  the SV really was way too stiff for backroads.  the issue is that I really do feel the lack of power.  I know I could beef up my 750, but that would require quite a bit of money to do it right and a bit of down time, so I am considering another bike, either a CB900f or a 1100F.  anyone who has one, what is your opinion?

I have owned a CB900F and I have owned many CB750s , Both F and K. If running properly these 750s have great power and torque. My K4 dynoed 52 hp at the rear wheel. This thing flies.

Power is a matter of preception. Compared to a properly running CB900F the 80s vintage stuff. The 900 will walk on a 70's 750. From a maintenance, workability and reliability, the CB750 is the choice hands down. The 900s are great until they break. Parts are an issue. The 900 in my opinion is a smoother running motor. But you cannot feel the torque like a 750.

I am running a 17 front and a 48 rear for sprockets on my K4. A huge improvement from the 18 tooth it came with. The 1978 F will have different sprocket sizes due to the big chain.

Handling, I think the stock CB750 handles better that the CB900F that I had. But both bikes are or were old with original suspension.

This thing flies.

<---- totally depends upon what you're comparing it to. Coming from a modern 1000cc bike that revs to 11k and going into a vintage bike that's nearly 40 years old with 1/2 the hp, I could see how the 750 feels a bit slow. I came from a GSX-R 750 into my CB and it's just a totally different game (and totally different purpose for having the bike).

Like Grabcon said, make sure your 750 is tuned properly and it should still be fun.

And why not look into the 836 big bore kit for your 750?

You can turn your 750F into a 1000F if you want and do some serious head work to make the 900F seem puny.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

The CB1100F are a great bike, put some decent shocks on it and it will take you anywhere. I had a CB900F2 for about 4 years in the 80's, so it was almost new but i had loads of fun on it once i got the suspension sorted, the 1100's had a far better engine with plenty of grunt.... Good all round bike...

I owned a CB900F and my brother owned an 1100F, both great bikes and very fast if you know how to ride them. I'd give the edge to the 900 in the handling dept, it was always #1 in the magazines too, it just didn't have the grunt of the 1100s it went up against. I would guess that both will run circles around a CB750K barring some heavy modification.

The 900s are still a good deal but the 1100s are getting pricey for a decent one as it was only produced 1 year.
You know you've achieved perfection in design, not when you have nothing more to add, but when you have nothing left to take away.

I am getting close to having my ' 82 900F mack together after a complete restoration, I'll let you know!

The 900f was Cycle World's best handling bike of '82.  I look forward to finding out.

I would have it together if I did not get lost in details like how to improve the flimsy turn signal mounts...

Three weekends to refurbish the Comstars.

You could always play with gearing. Just a thought.  ;)
