If I Cut It Off?
« on: May 13, 2009, 08:58:43 AM »
The support tor the rear fender that the seat rests on on my 78 cb750k I want to remove and was wondering if it will compromise the integrity of the frame.
I want the rear to be flat for a seat pan that I am going to put on. I am not a welder and I wont be paying anyone to weld a brace back there so should I just leave it there and figure out another seat or can it be removed without weakening the frame too much?

Not sure how similar the support is to my 76 SS, but my solo pan was made to go over it.

Or did you eliminate that idea already?

Lots of people seem to remove these without too much issue.  Will it weaken the frame, sure a little.  The question is, will it weaken it enough to matter?  How hard do you ride the bike?  You'll probably see an increase in frame flex near the rear shock area.

Some people connect the rears of the top rails with a 180 degree bent tube.  Make the parts and fit them up right, and any decent weldor can zap them together in about 5 minutes.  Pay them in beer or something.

depends on whether or not it's going to hurt the frame. if not then I want to take it off. i am going to go for the brat style seat look. long enough for a passenger.

got a few people doing beer work for me right now. that is a good idea, the downside is that it's low priority to them and understandably. i haven't been able to ride yet this year 'cause all of my fuel tanks are being painted with Busch Lite right now. I do like the bent loop on the back end tho

Maybe if you "paid" with something like Fat Tire or 90 Shilling they'd get painted sooner... hehe.
