cl & cb 450
« on: October 29, 2005, 02:34:50 pm »
What is the difference in the cb's & the cl's?  Do the motors have the same mounts?  For instance, can a cl motor fit directly into a cb frame?   ???

As I understand it, the CB's were strictly street bikes, characterized by lower exhausts and disc brakes in front. CL's were more of an Enduro-style, with higher exhaust pipes and drums on both wheels (the thinking of the day was that drums, being enclosed, kept dirt out and kept the linings from being fouled up). As far as I know, the engines were the same.

Yep as far as i know the differences were purely cosmetic. I just got a genuine Honda manual for one of those and given time i will be scanning it to CD in pdf format

not sure about the 450's, but the cl350 and the cb350 have slight gearing differences as well.

Cool, I found a wrecked 450 (cant remember if its a cb or cl, thus the question) that is basically being gave to me & I am getting a CB450 rigid chop frame in another deal.  Hopefully also scoring, in the same deal, a cb360 in decent shape and a 78 750f that needs damn near nothing.......
A bigger garage is what I need now. lol

The CB is defined as a sports bike and the CL a trail bike, but arn't we missing something here, was'nt the Cls all twins and the CBs as far as this forum is concerned all SOHC fours.
Do you want to put a twin motor into a fours frame or vice versa ??

no, there was certainly a cb350 twin! superior to the cb350 four, in my opinion (if you don't mind a little vibration.)

this isn't a sohc twin forum, but while we're at it, i highly reccomend the cb350 over the cb360. the 360 had cam chain tensioner problems, and a high percentage of them ended up wearing straight through the engine case. also, the 360 went to a 6 speed transmission, but speed 6 isn't really so different than gear 5 on a 350, so the result is quicker shifting. the 350's were bullet proof. never leak, and i've had several that sat for 20+ years which fired right up with a new battery and tune up. first kick. stick a 360 front end, with the disk brake, on a 350 and you're in the best of both worlds.

I've got a 74' CB450 & a 74' CL450. The only differences I've seen are: the CL has a trimmer gas tank, the front fender is shorter, the gearing (sprocket-wise) may be a little lower( not sure) of course the exhaust system is up high and for the record the CL's were referred to  as "Scramblers". I don't remember about the later versions but, the older CL72/77's had what we called skid plates (engine protectors or what ever) Of course there were more differences between the old CB72(250/77(305) and the CL72(250)/77(305)'s. Basically, you can swap about anything from the CB450 to the CL450 and back. I hope I've helped without being confusing.
