starting motor safty unit
« on: May 03, 2009, 10:45:31 AM »
I just picked up a 76 750 rolling chassis with engine and carbs. only. It had no wiring so I got a old harness at a junk yard and just want to get it to run. From what I can tell the safety swatches from clutch and neutral go threw this starter safety switch. Can I bypass this because I have no clutch switch.I have been looking in FAQ but cannot find what I am looking for. Like I said all I want to do now is to get it to run before I do anything else. Thanks for any help in advance Dannie

Its easy to by-pass but I don't have a book in front of me to tell you which wires.I run Yami 650 controls and don't have the clutch switch. If you look at a wiring diagram, you can see the 2 wires to the switch. Just connect them together and thats it.Just make sure you are in nuetral or have the clutch in when you start up.

You just need 12v to the coils to make spark.

No safety unit for that.

If you want the electric start you just need to get 12V across the solenoid small wires to get it to activate.  That's what the SMSU prevents until switch condition are met.

A jumper wire between the two wire ends in the head light bucket is all you need, from the switch one wire is green with a red stripe, the other is green, both are male ends. Make a jumper wire, male end + male end for the green wire with red stripe, about 4" to 6" long
and find the wire coming into the head light bucket from the main wire harness, green with red stripe, female end,and connect that wire to one of the green connectors.
Works for me.   Head

mrbreeze the service is great, thanks everyone. I got it to fire with some brake cleaner in the intakes,so now to clean the carbs and put on some pipes and get to run for more than a second.
