NO Insurance
« on: May 04, 2009, 12:24:22 AM »
I'm at a friends house today, and somewhere in the conversation he says he got a $760.00 ticket last month for no Insurance on his truck.  He forgot................

Well I walk back to my truck in his driveway and check mine.

Expired March 13th 2009!!!!!!  1 1/2 months of Gab, Van, and Van Island driving :'(
SOHC build  tunnel vision  ;D

It's in the driveway now until Tues when the Insurance office opens.
Christ I'm a lucky if not forgetful bugger ;)

If I had to pay that much if caught, I believe I would just hand this eye chart to the prosecutor and cover one of my eyes as I read...............and throw my ass at the mercy of the Court.

sorry to hear about your Provincial donation.

I had a sheriff follow me on my FZR1000 the other day.  I'm used to that treatment since the bike looks like it belongs to a serial killer.

I behaved myself but after a few miles he finally lit me up.  Said he ran my plates and it showed my insurance had expired.  I'd forgotten and let it slip a couple of weeks, but luckily I'd just gotten my new cards in the mail.

He looked at the insurance cards, looked me over and said "have a nice day".  I didn't realize they could find insurance info by your plate number now, or that it was enough reason by itself to pull you over.

In Colorado you are required to bring prof  of insurance when you get plates.  But it really isnt needed as they usually look it up on the computer.

In Illinois, the DMV has a link to see if your insurance is current before they issue new yearly registration stickers.  If your insurance has lapsed more than a few months, your plates are no longer valid.
They also have a link to the postal system to see if your address is current.  Big Brother is watching, boys  ;)

In Cali if your insurance is expired for 14 days they notify the DMV and you can get pulled for it.

Happened to me once, I parked my car on base, forgot about my insurance. Was gone for two months to Yuma AZ, came back from a training excersize and drove it off base to go home. Got pulled over right away, I went to court and thankfully they dropped it because I was out of state, but boy did that suck.

My insurance policies all auto-renew.  Worst case scenario is I'm stuck with an overpriced policy and an out-of-date insurance card, but I'm not without insurance.

I've been nailed for not having the current card on me, but the penalty for that paled in comparison to the speeding ticket :)

Happen to me also. I thought my insurance on my truck was not expiring to two more days. Of course I was pulled over and given a $500 ticket (1996). Luck for me I researched the ticketed code and it happen to be the wrong code ( they had changed the infraction code just a month prior). I took it to court and won! Dismissed by Judge because the Constable did not show up in Court. I will never know if I could of beaten it?

+1 on the auto renewal. I have always had this...in fact just assumed I had to  ??? I guess the onus would be on me to cancel it prior to the renewal.

Yes, and one will get a notice in the mail from the CO DMV if you let your insurance lapse, so "they" know within a month or so if a vehicle has current insurance or not.

In my young and retarded days... I ran from the PoPo once.

I made it home, had the bike under the cover for about 15 minutes... but they found me anyway... hard to hide a huge collection of bikes in the front yard.   :-\
I thought they were going to beat down the door.

anyway, no insurance, tag was supposed to be on a different bike, speeding 113 in a 35 (going over the dam), and fleeing the scene.

I wasn't fessing up at first and finally he got really F'ing pissed and said he was hauling me in or he'd drop the fleeing charge if I admitted.
So, I admitted my wrongdoing.

The judge dropped the insurance and registration charges since I got it taken care of before the court date... which, from my understanding, is the usual way of things.  In fact, I've done this more than once when my coverage lapped once or twice more.  Not the way it is in Canada?  How about elsewhere in the states?

The speeding ticket still took a nice chunk of change outa my pocket though.   :-\

Well, bare in mind that any charge/conviction is at the sole discretion of the judge.

If the only charge is not having insurance I would doubt that he would be quick to drop it. If, as in Heff's case, there are other charges involved they are more likely to drop one or more leaving you still being penalized but not necessarily to the same degree.

You can't even talk to the ugly dmv lady here in MO without ins. If you do get pulled over with out or current and have to go to court you can go get ins. on the same day as said ticket and the judge will let it pass. werd how it changes so much from state to state.

It was similar to that when I lived in Texas, if not more lenient.  If you got pulled over and didn't have current insurance, registration or inspection sticker, they gave you ten days to get it current and show up at the courthouse, then they waived the ticket and charged you $10 for the processing fee.

You didn't need to see a judge, just a clerk at a window, so it wasn't even a judge letting you off.  It's just the way the system was set up.

If you did that up here these days, they'd toss you in the ditch, crush your bike on the spot and fine you a few $1,000 for street racing  :o

In all seriousness, going that far above the limit and with improper tags etc., they'd impound the vehicle on the spot in Toronto.  We've got some pretty serious street racing laws on the books now.  Minimum fine is $2,000 going to $10,000 max.  Street racing is defined as going 50KM/hr over the posted limit, which would be like doing 90 in a 60 mph zone or so.

All this talk about insurance etc. and I realized my license had expired back in March.  Went to get it renewed this morning, no problem.  This afternoon drove down to the BMW Toronto dealership to pick up a couple parts for the R75 and got nailed doing 70km/h in a 50 zone  ::)  $105 fine and a few more points for my insurance company to smile about.

Yay.

did you stab the throttle and say "whatever, I'm legal now"?
that'd make me rethink renewing my license.   ;D

Nope. Haven't driven it yet.  I've been tinkering with the Tracy.  In fact just finished and am going for a ride.
