Airbox Woes
« on: May 04, 2009, 11:59:12 AM »
Hey, all, and thanks in advance for everyone's help.

The airbox on my '76 F is held together by two bolts that run from top to bottom, through the box. On the bottom, two hex bolts are countersunk in to the plastic body. The LHS one came off OK, but the right hex head on the bottom has rounded off the plastic that's supposed to hold it still, and doesn't want to co-operate. Because of the counter sink I can't get a wrench on it, so it just spins into oblivion.

Needless to say, I can't get to my air-filter and that's a major pain. I was going to use an easy-out, but that'll F the bolt so I'd rather not.

Can anyone offer some guidance?

This happened to my original airbox.  I ended up cutting away the rounded out plastic around the hex nut, enough so that I could fit a socket around it.  Once you get a socket on the nut, just hold it in place with the socket wrench and turn the top bolt with a wrench.  Of course, this may not look pretty when the airbox is upside down, but when it's installed on the bike, it's a non-issue.  If it still bothers you, you can always find a used airbox online since so many people ditch 'em for pods.  Hope that helps!

Stripped airboxes are all too common.  :(

Ha. I know I know, but there was really no way else to split the airbox.  I ended up buying a replacement anyways because the boots were really crispy.  I think I found one on ebay for around 30 bucks in pretty nice shape.  Just make sure you measure your carb inlets size and get the right box.

Can you stick a stubby flat blade screwdriver in beside the bottom bolt head to jam it in place while you turn the top loose?  If you do get it loose the airbox comes out easier through the right side.  When you pull it part way out it then gives you enough room to reach in and disconnect the hose that runs to the breather cannister.

That's kind of you, thanks. Does anyone know if the mounting is the same? The bike is a 76F with the engine & carbs out of a 73K and bran new soft airbox rubbers.
If you've got a second, figure out what it would cost to ship to Blain, Wa., and drop me a PM.

Thanks again everyone.

I had the same problem on my 1976 CB750F.

I also tried the screwdriver trick that was mentioned, all the screwdriver did was mess up my airbox even more.

Scanning my toolbox for ideas/tools I spotted some crazy glue!! Put a few drops on the bottom airbox bolt allowed me to unscrew the other bolt from the top. Not a very pretty fix but at least I could get the airbox apart!

Thanks!

Did not think of that.  Maybe some JB Weld squeezed in there would do the trick too.
