cam bearings
« on: May 04, 2009, 04:15:12 PM »
Hi,

I've rebuilt the top end of my '72 CL 350 twin and now I'm having trouble adjusting the valves. I replaced the old head, cam, cam case, and side covers(bearings) with parts off an older model; they came from a single, used bike. The valves won't adjust properly because the rocker pins just keep turning when I tighten up the lock nut.

I've tried messing with the end play on the camshaft( it's good now) and I changed the o-rings on the rocker pins. None of this has worked.

I noticed finally that the older side covers/bearings had a counter-sink where the o-ring fits into the cover; the parts I installed did not have this counter-sunk hole. I'm thinking that this is why the rocker pins don't seat correctly.

I plan to take my replacement parts to a machine shop I know to have the counter-sink hole drilled into them. Does anyone agree or disagree with this?

Thanks in advance.

There were some differences between the 73 on and the 72's and previous. This may be one of them.
No.
