has anyone used this before without paper gaskets?  I had a guy who works on triumphs tell me he uses it without paper gaskets and gets no leaks at all... on old triumphs!

I've used it many, many times with no gaskets. It's all I use to seal engine cases.

Yes, I use Threebond w/o paper gaskets on all left side engine covers (alternator and shifter cover).
Works great for me. The best gasket sealer I have ever used. I have never found any parts of Threebond in the oil or the engine case. It stays where you put it on.
On the clutch cover you need a paper gasket, otherwise your kickstarter will not jump back. There you need
the thickness of a paper gasket.

just forgotten to say,.....I let it dry for a day before I fill oil in the engine.
