CB750 Gas Tank
« on: May 05, 2009, 12:01:06 PM »
I recently got a Gas Tank off eBay. The seller said it was off a 1974 CB750. My bike is a 71 CB750.  To make a long storry short, the tank dosen't fit. The space between the front where it's supposed to fit on the rubber knobs is to wide. Is there a difference between the 71-76 tanks?

Hi Sarge,

Yes, the tanks are different.  With the passing years, Honda increased fuel capacity slightly almost every year.  I can't give you exact differences........ but I am sure others will join in and can give you that info.

Just rough guess here to give you an idea, I seem to remember the very first tanks on '69s were 3.9 or 4 gallons.  My '74 750 K4 has a 4.45 gallon tank.

What do you plan on doing with the tank now?  What kind of shape is it in?  I am asking because I have toyed with the idea of getting a second gas tank???????

Edit Add On Just curious........ Are you into firearms?  I am very much......... One of my more passionate interests....... thing is I have too many of them......... interests, not firearms.

I just recently acquired a tank off of a 70, but the badge plates have been shaved. Looks like it needs a petcock. If you were just looking for a tank that can easily be made to look nice, maybe we could swap?
Send me a pm if you're interested. If you spent money on a show quality, I cannot help you .  ;D

Really? I was under the impression the 69-70 model 750 had a 5 gal tank. On a recent fill up I put over 3 gals in it and never used the reserve. I would assume the reserve is at least a gallon, no?

4.7 gallons according to the model guide on the sohc4 website.  1.3 gal reserve.

I covered this phenom in my build thread. My K2 frame had a right side petcock. I wanted a left side petcock, thinking the tanks were otherwise identical. Wrong, the left side petcock tanks are wider in the front and mine is 3/8" longer overall.

First off, the rubber bumpers are different part numbers, the later ones stick out further to catch the wider tank I think.  I found rubber bumpers at the junkyard which are otherwise identical to to my originals, but stand away from the frame further.

I had to cut the backside of the front horshoe brackets to allow the tank to slide forward more so my seat would close. Welded some extenders onto the horshoes.

Hi Guys,

Looks like I had things reversed from the reality.  Honda decreased fuel capacity slightly with the passing years.  My apologies; ........ my memory is decreasing slightly with passing years.

Sorry I threw you a bad low ball Sarge... :-\

If the tank is wider at mounts, then shim the ribbers.

in the last while, I have put 77K, 75 400F, 71 500, CB 450 tanks on a 750 frame, and I believe they all fit the front..

Maybe something else wrong?

Am thinking of something I saw once.. guy had a dent in the tank, tried to puush dent out with air, put TOO MUCH in.. tank widened..

getting a funny feeling about your tank...
