Eliminating my battery and electric starter
« on: May 06, 2009, 04:37:34 PM »
Ok, let me start by saying you guys (and girls?) are f'ing hilarious! I was actually searching google for the answer to this question when I ran across this forum/thread and, after seeing y'all put this dude in his place decided I had to join up. I'm a bit leary to ask this question again but since this seems to be the initial thread for it I'll give it a shot. I'm used to building yamaha XS's which can use a modified RD350 permanent magnet rotor to generate electricity without a battery. This afternoon I purchased a 1974 CB750 for my next project but I'm new to the CB world. My question is this: is there a honda bike comparable to an RD350 that utilizes a permanent magnet rotor and, if so, can said rotor be easily modified to fit a CB? I was considering sourcing a setup from a dual sport dirtbike because they run lights without a battery but, before I start buying rotors and experimenting with cramming something in there, thought I would ask if anyone has tried it? Thanks in advance!

Welcome psygnosis, glad you like our warped sense of humour  ;D.
And since you asked this question in a reasonable manner you will most likely get some reasonable answers......just not from me as i have no idea..... :D

Welcome!

It would probably be in your best interest (and everybody else's ;)) if you started a new thread on this.  By tagging onto this one you're likely to miss out on a lot of help you may otherwise have gotten.  Also, use the search field at the top right on the main page.  There has been lots of discussion on this subject in the past.  If you search from sub-forum or specific thread pages, you'll only be searching that particular area.  Good luck! :)

Thanks for the search info and the advice on starting a new thread. Hey 736, I'm just sorry that I've been spent the cash to big-bore three XS650 projects into 750's when I could have just been building CB750's all along! I bought the one today for the price of a big bore kit on an XS!

My first "big" bike was an XS 650.  That damned thing would vibrate my ass numb in about 30 minutes.  10 minutes sooner than I managed to get to work ; )

give KEN a call @ http://www.cyclexchange.net/Honda%20Page.htm

he has a unit that he makes the does exactly that!!!! but you wont be able to use the the electric starter!!!

but that is all you need....

so the short answer is NO there is no other honda that any of my "racer" buddies have used that put in a 750 and made it with a perm mag alt....

you can go with m3 they have a "CR" mag but i think its a little pricey

Okay, so we got the "start a new thread" thing down.  Now how about a new post title? ;) :D :D

Seriously, if you want help on this you don't want to associate yourself at all with the previous thread on this same subject. ;D

Okay, got the thread title changed. Evolution- no worries about losing the electric starter because I don't want it anyway but HOLY CRAP, that Cycle X system is more than I paid for the bike! Has anyone here used this product?

I have.

Placed it on a customer's bike and he has absolutley NO problems with it. I would not hesitate to put it on another bike and it is well worth the money when comparing what you would have to do to make your own.

Hope you like kicking a lot... I for one will be lazy and stick to my elec start. lol.

Hey Havoc, can you tell me how the Cycle X system works? Do you have to kick it over a few times to build an initial charge before attempting to actually start the bike?

You have to kick 3 times....

At least he does anyway. Maybe it's just the old original wiring that we tapped into, but it seems pretty easy to me if you think about it.

Also you can bump start it with extreme ease if you cannot kick due to some illness.

Just be sure that your carbs are in good order and she pops right off.

When I first got it ready to go it fired on the first kick. Now several years later, it fires on the 3rd. Carbs have never been off the bike since I worked on it (that i know of) and the psycho rides it almost everyday of the year.

Come to think of it neither have the plugs.... hmmmm.

Either way it's a huge time and $$ saver over finding OEM replacement parts to make what you want.

Well, I guess that settles it then- I'll run over to UCLA after work and see if they have any medical experiments I can sign up for to get the cash...Thanks for all the info and, hopefully, I'll be able to contribute a bit on the forum as I get deeper into this thing
