I can't even kick twice without hurting myself.
I keep wondering why people don't want batteries? Explain!
Ahh pasadena. I miss it there. Sorta...

Reminiscent of the way motorcycles used to be. Kick only.

For most it's a feeling of bad-assness. But for others it's a feel of nostalgia that the CB750 yet again stands up and says.... "I have that"

Many people have hurt themselves doing far less.

It's all about the technique! ;)

And for others, it's a feeling of

"my starter stopped working and I never bothered to fix it because it kick-starts so easily, and the battery lasts longer, and I'm too lazy to fix the starter but not too lazy to kick-start the bike every time and now I'm contradicting myself and this is all too confusing, plus I think I look cool kicking it!" ;D

Not to mention the fact that not having the option of electric start really forces you to get to know your bike on a more "intimate" level.  Depending on what the temperature is and when the bike was last ridden, you really have to know exactly how much throttle to open, and how much choke to use to get the bike to start without wearing out your leg.

It's also an added anti-theft device, without actually adding anything to the bike.

I can't even kick twice without hurting myself.

I've done that!  62 BSA 650 with the magneto put in 180 out of phase.  Straight legged the kicker and the engine fired backwards launching me straight over the handlebars onto the sidewalk.  Stars in broad daylight, some blood.  "Hey, that was mine!"  No laughter, 'cause no one else was around to see it.  Better that way.

I can say first head, landing on your hand doesn't have any long term effects.  ;D

The reason I want kick-only is because these old bikes with excited field alternators are so f'ing dependent on having not one iota less than 12.6 volts in order to start and run properly and I want a system that will always supply the correct voltage just by spinning. It's not that it has to be kick only so much as I just can't see the point of keeping a heavy battery and starter in the thing when I can add a system to eliminate both parts and all the headaches. Additionally, I'm building a bike loosely based on the modified Yamaha TRX850 featured in the first Tomb Raider movie and what makes that bike so badass is that it has a modern streetfighter look AND kick-start only

reminds my of my old 1984 honda cr500 dirtbike..... :o :o :o :o :o     to start it you had to stand on the kick starter and with full weight kick down...if she back fired you where a pilot for a few seconds or break your leg.....lucky enough i only went flying for a few times...... ;)
Marti, I want you to know, I like you an awful lot, but guys have said far less and left wearing their drinks on their shirts.

I had a Yamaha IT495 and it had a habit of trying its best to introduce me to the front guard, face first mostly, that bike knew how to kick back but it went like a rat up a drainpipe...... ;D

Why not score an ARD magneto and then use a tiny 12V dry-cell battery as a "primer" for the alternator?  You'd need to do some custom electronics for this, I think, to keep from frying aforementioned tiny battery.  Probably want to add one of those big caps they sell for "batteryless" operation to serve as a buffer in the charging system.

In this thread there is a guy who has put a CB 350 rotor in the 750 to accomplish a batteryless charging system.
No details are given, but the 350 rotor would seam like the place to get started.

psygnos,
I agree fully with getting rid of some of that weight and plethora of things to go wrong, plus I like using a single switch housing on throttle side and only a lever on the left.

But I just run a small square battery 5.5A and just kickstart it all the time.

..................................................................................

Question,
if I were to mount a XL 250 charging system, and only ran a sealbeam light and tailight and horn (no Estart), would that not work, and allow running a much slimmer alternator cover? maybe its 6V?
