Engine cranking - No Spark
« on: May 07, 2009, 08:30:04 AM »
I just relocated my killswitch and starter button and headlight switch.

and my symptoms after my marvelous rewiring skills are as follows.
Engine cranking but no spark and the starter button still cranks when killswitch is in off position and no matter whether
key is turned. I am sure I have made some fundamental error. Does this spell out something obvious - if not I'll try provide some more details.. Take pity on an invalid and please don't shout  :)

The ability for your starter button to still turn the engine over is one thing, and the issues are likely related, but you need to check voltage at your coils when the ignition is on and the kill switch is on as well.

Sounds like you're not getting any power there at all, and that power is getting to your starter relay regardless of your kill switch.

Got any wiring diagrams of what you've done?

Hahah I was afraid you would ask what I have done  ;D

I think the problem lies in the switches I have bought are LED tipped and I have wired them up wrong - I am just going to check
something and will let you know If that clears the problem......

yes Hotwiring the kill switch together gives me a spark confirming I have wired the switches wrong.
But I still can crank the engine with the 2 kill switch wires disconnected........ ???

I made a few jump connections from the kill switch to feed 2 accessories and they all share the same earth?
Something to do with that?

Thats Normal on a honda the kill switch just disconects the coils

Oh brilliant, cheers Bryan - I havent made a total pigs ear then... feel a bit better now .
it's the LED tipped switches that are confusing me.

They have three terminals.

1. Ground symbol
2. Positive symbol
3. Light symbol

When connection is made to the positive and negative symbol
the led turns on when the switch is turned on but the switch itself does not function: i.e the appliance doesent turn on.

When connections are made to the 'positive' and 'light' symbol the switch functions
normally but the led tip does not light when switched on.

If I make a connection to the 'ground and the 'light' symbol the LED tip stays constantly on.
I'm obviously making another silly mistake - How should I be wiring these up?

Got it!

"positive" = power source positive,
"light" = load positive
"ground" = erm... grounded!  ;D
