I Would,First, mark the matching wires, if you feel you have to, and remove the switch from its frame mounting bracket, wherever it might be...... under the gas tank or on a bracket elsewhere.
Then, take off the rubber covering the back portion of the switch. Look for small holes; I spray electronic contact cleaner in these holes from as many different directions as possible. Move the switch into a position allowing the contact cleaner to drain out, bringing with it tons of dirty junk. Repeat this process several times, a lot of gunk really does come out of there.
This will clean up the electrical contact areas and you may not have to pull the switch apart at all. Let the contact cleaner dry completely before connecting the wires and trying the switch. I have done this many times on my switch when I was afraid I would have to take it apart. I never have had to take it apart......... this cleaning process always works for me........ same switch 35+ years now.......
