Alright, I sanded the rest of the tail down to the plastic with 180 grit, and wet the seam down with some MEK, then I pressed a super mushy chip of the remaining plastic into the bubble holes.
after that, I dripped the thinned glue on top and wiped it a little smooth with my finger.

Looking good!

If it were me, I'd be thinking around this time about doing a "gorilla arm flex test" just to test the strength of the repair before doing the fine finishing work.

oh trust me, I've also dropped it a few times, and blown it out of my hand across the shop once or twice with the air compressor.....
but I did do the gorilla arm test by holding the bottom ends and bringing them together (out of curiosity) and it flexes with a good solid curve, like it was never cut.

I'm pretty happy with how it's workin' out.

update: I had to do a little filling in the center of the duck tail, it had a low spot that was unsatisfactory

*sigh* more progress, I sanded my arms off again, I used 180, 220, and 400 grit.
Then I painted it with some filler primer and found out the crack in the corner needs repair on the outside too...  duh :-X

needs sanding with 400 and a black primer

Heh, that little crack in the rear right corner was visible way back on page three.  Just saying :)

It's always like a little "grand unveiling" when you lay on that first coat of primer, isn't it?  Suddenly the thing you've been sweating over looks a lot more like the thing you've got in your head.  Well, with luck it does, at any rate ;)

well I thought that crack was smooth...rookie mistake :-\
I patched it from the back, and thought it would hold, but all the manhandling from the sanding made it open back up.
i ground a valley with a diamond ball into both sides of the crack and soaked the area with MEK.
There's a chip soaking right now to make a reinforcement for the back, and I filled the front side already with a pile of glue. good times.

wish I had a heckler to hang out and watch.
it's lonely in the middle of nowhere   :-[

I took auto body in a vocational school for a year, so I enjoy what I'm doing here. just really rusty. :)

I have only dumb, obvious things to say, like:

  • "Hey, guess you should have let it dry longer"
or
  • "Sand it back down, then cure it in the sun for several days to make sure it doesn't happen again."
or
  • "Haste makes waste"

...and things along those lines, but actually saying any one of those would make it seem like I've never had something like this happen myself ;)  I feel your pain bro.

Have you done any more work?

then gut, and fit the gauges into an old yamaha headlight bucket with the integrated oval speedometer..... but thats for another thread.
