We were supposed to go riding....
« on: May 07, 2009, 01:52:31 PM »
Monday morning a friend called and asked me to go riding after work.

As I currently have no "running" bike at the moment I had to decline.

5 minutes ago I just found out from some friends that he was killed on Monday afternoon.

He had just removed his jacket liner and helmet due to the heat and not 10 minutes later a van turned left into his lane and he slammed into the side.

He died instantly of massive head trauma, or so I'm told.

While it was stupid to remove his helmet I am sick with grief. He was my first "real" customer. I went over his bike with a fine tooth comb.

He was 26. He died on his birthday. He has to have a closed casket funeral.

Real bummer...very sad day for you I am sure.  Our thoughts are with you and his family.  26...way to young for sure.  I have been tempted to take off my helmet on those hot days, but my wife and I keep it on.  This just makes me think we are making the right decision.  But even a helmet can not guarantee you can survive an accident like that.  Be there for his family.

I feel your pain man....I went through 3 couples in one year many moons ago. I actually gave up riding for many years because of it and my ex's insistence. I know it will be a vast void for quite awhile. Time will help heal the pain, but the loss will always be there dulled only by fond memories. SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.

Things happen in the blink of an eye. 26?! Far, far too young. Reminds me tell my sons how proud I am of them and that I love them.

I watched an aluminum ladder blow out of an on-coming pickup truck the other day on a 2 lane highway. I was riding with a passenger at about 60, as the ladder slide across the road into my lane. It stopped quicker than I thought and I was able to go around it, but what if.. I guess my point is bikes are inherently dangerous, stuff happens really quickly, and we all take the risks knowingly because we love riding.

I'm really sorry to hear about your customer and friend. I don't think it's so bad to die doing something you really enjoy, but 26 is far too young.

I agree and it's a risk we take. I know I take that risk everyday with pleasure. But it's sad to see people whom you have spent years with die from something so stupid.

To make things worse he and I ride side by side almost all the time. Always pushing the other to stay in form while trying to make our way through traffic.

Had I gone....

*shudder* I cringe everytime I think about it.
