Engine Stand Questions for my 650
« on: May 05, 2009, 02:08:09 PM »
I am redoing my '80 CB650 Custom and have decided to pull the engine. I want to be able to work on the engine while it is out of the frame, and I have seem so great custom jobies using a car engine holder, some angle iron and bolts. One of them had the bolts just going through the top and bottom bolt holes in the back and looked super easy to do. My question is, if I do it that way, do I run the risk of cracking the case or the mounts from the weight of the engine not being supported up front? Also, if I support it this way, can I rotate it upside down to make working on the bottom end easier?

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=24188.0

kinda like the bottom one, without the front supports. I am trying to do it right, but save money at the same time (sound familiar  ;D )

Thanks,

Brandon

you can just bolt it onto the back of the engine,no problem....you won't crack the case doing that......

I also have a 1980 cb650 and just yesterday took the engine out, tonight i will hang it on a engine stand from a car and post some pictures of it on my build thread....(build thread is below in my signature)...
Marti, I want you to know, I like you an awful lot, but guys have said far less and left wearing their drinks on their shirts.

Oh, I got the camera and batteries, there will be pics  :D  I bought it in December and am doing a custom restore sorta. I haven't had it running yet, but when I bought it we shot starter fluid in the air filter and she sounded very much like she wanted to start, but 2 yr old gas is pretty useless.

Thanks,

Brandon

Checked out your build thread, the chain replacement for the shocks is unique, I like it  ;D  Didn't see the engine stand though. Did you use angle iron to convert it from car to bike engine and if so, what size angle iron?

Thanks,

Brandon

I used an old angle iron from an old bed,it's thin, like 1/8 of an inch(guessing)...doesn't have to be really thick...
