Oil leaking out of points cover...Crank seal?
« on: May 13, 2009, 07:33:34 AM »
Well, I knew it was too good to be true. I had everything on the bike working perfectly. No leaks, no issues. I go to clean the bike I notice a little oil seaping from the bottom of the points cover. I removed the cover and see a small puddle inside the housing at the bottom. Not a lot, but its there. I have a dynatek, no points in there.

Im assuming the only thing it can be coming from is the crank seal right? Its the original one so I guess 30+ years and 38,000 miles is a good life. Anything else it could be?

Im also assuming the engine has to be removed to replace this one seal, correct? Should I wait to do this when its really bad, or bite the bullet and do it soon? And if I do it, should I go ahead and tackle anything else while its apart?

Thanks in advance!

Why worry? Just clean it up every now and then. Next oil change consider trying Castrol GTX 15-40 High Mileage that helps stopping leaks. (Or Castrol GTX Diesel 15W-40 which is the same oil, at least on our market). Worked for me.
