semi OT, who's spamming craigs list?
« on: May 12, 2009, 06:57:26 PM »
Last 4 months there've been a few dozen posts that say simply:

"Wanted older model 750 honda."

 Lately it's been changed to:

"wanted to buy older honda running or non running ok."

Pretty much have all of west michigan covered.

Ordinarily wouldn't be concerned, but I know at least 5 people who've responded without hearing anything, and with 8 listings since april 22nd, you sound pretty desperate, so check your spam folder.

Ken.

Yep, check other areas for that same type of post, somebody's hoarding parts for their retirement fund.  Hell it worked for Carol Shelby...

Local here is willing to pay "Top Dollar" for a 69 to 76 CB750K.  Has posted at least once a week for Several months.

You have to believe that someone has contacted him by now.

I see these here in Nashville as well. Spanner1 knows a guy in Ireland that has a buyer here in the states that ships vintage bikes to Ireland. He wrenches'em and flips'em Apparently the taxes and what not on a new bike over there are ridiculous and old bikes are cheap. If he's doing it, I bet a lot other are folks are doing it too.

I think this is it if I remember what Spanner1 told correctly:

I've been thinking that they hope someone will call up and say 'I have this 1969 honda 750 I just want out of here.'

I just think it's strange that myself and a few others I know have emailed them without a response.

The hell with that, after looking at those prices I want to go over there and sell my bike. Seventy five hundred Euros is currently $10,000...

There's a guy in my area that has been advertising his 500cc '85 Magna as the ideal license-test bike available to rent for $50. If it handles anything like my 550cc Nighthawk (it looks almost identical) then there's no way I'd want to use it for the test. He posts at least twice a day, so I've been marking his posts as spam.

when i see that crap I always click the 'spam/overpost' link at the top right. they aren't supposed to be posting want ads in the for sale section. it'll get taken down if you do that.

A buddy of mine told me that people post those kinds of ads on craigslist to get people to reply so they can compile working e-mail addresses, presumably to sell later on.

I don't know how true this is or not but I do know that I once responded to a for sale for a cheap project ford falcon and the "seller" spamed me with e-mail about automobile insurance for a while (probably still does but the spam filter catches it). There was no ford falcon. There never was. :-[

+1

I also flag all the ads I find where someone posts in the motorcycle section that they have a car/truck they're willing to trade for a bike.  I'm not looking in the motorcycle section for a car or truck!! >:(
