What Size Engine? What Model? Yamaha
« on: May 11, 2009, 01:48:35 PM »
I am thinking of buying this bike. It runs and is real cheap but all the ad says is "dirt bike runs good needs work- $150"
can anyone identify this bike?

No idea, but it would seem by 'dirt bike' they really mean dirt tracker.  Buy it - seat is worth 1/2 or more of what you're paying for the bike.

I am interested to see what turns up on this.  I have googled a bit and the closest I can find to that egine side cover is at http://www.randymott.com/tracker.htm  Makes me wonder is the top end is from another bike.  The tope end looks like it is for yammi's a few years later.

I'll bet Ecosse would have some good insight on this.

Too bad that that one got away. Don't give up now! ;)  I don't know much about the history of the TX500, except it is a DOHC, 8-valve, 500cc Vertical twin. I think they made a 750 also but, don't quote me on THAT one. ::) Now, you keep looking, there's one one out there with YOUR name on it. ;)

At that price looks good to buy just cause.  OK if you have the cash and no honda parts to buy.  We did touch on the 750 in one of the 650 threads. Some pics showed up in it.

It is also know as an XS500.  The TX was only used for 73 and maybe some 74 year bikes.  There have been a couple for sale here lately.  I don't know much about them but I thought they had Hitachi carbs(not sure on this) and rebuild kits may be hard to come by.  It is a good looking bike with an engine a bit ahead of it's time.

You know, I was thinking that I remembered there being an XS version, but I sure wouldn't have sworn by it. :-\  Appreciate the additional info on it. ;)

Its also the worst japanese bike ever, made 70's Triumphs look reliable and oil tight

I think this one also has the crankshaft balancer making it very smooth for a twin.  That and the cam chain would need to be properly adjusted on a regular basis.  They may have a tendency to leak oil.

"Chains by the Yard,

is how one bike mag editor, so aptly put it, back in the day..

The 750 is easy to tell, it has a cast exhaust manifold bolted to the engine, then, the pipes come out of that..

I think that's debatable - my vote for worse bike would go to the old Kawasaki W1 model.
I had the great misfortune to work on a couple in the late 60's, an experience I won't soon forget......

You may be right there, i should have added "IN UK". The W1 never came here until its recent re-design
