I recommend a Fender Blues Junior.  Good tone, light, and reasonably priced.  All tube.  My NYC friends use them because they can take them on the subway.  I prefer it to a Deluxe for clarity.

If you didn't mind secondhand and wanted to go with a British company then you might consider an old Trace Elliot guitar combo - a Speed Twin valve if you can find one or a solid state Super Tramp. Although Trace Elliot are well known for their top quality bass amps they made some highly regarded guitar amps too that can be found pretty cheaply these days and are often on ebay.
Traynor are making amps again. They are Canadian and have a reputation for bombproof, high quality amps in the Fender mould. I have an old guitar combo and really like it. If you could find an old one, a YGM or YGL combo you would probably never want to part with it and it'll cost half the price of a vintage Fender and is arguably better.
Just some suggestions as good value alternatives to the more mainstream amps.
I've always liked Voxs and wish I still had my AC30s from back in the days when no one wanted that old school valve rubbish and lusted after solid state reliability!
You would probably want a good effects unit to play through these amps as they are basic units although Vox amongst others do some modelling amps with a large array of effects built in which might be all you need for a while.
Good luck and look forward to hearing what you decide upon.

i would LOVE an ac-30 one of these years, my second favourite amp of all time, right behind a pre-cbs fender twin  :)

I don't know what kind of music you like to play but line 6 makes some pretty good amps too. they even have crazy distortion settings and they don't really break the bank either. My buddy got a 70w for 200 bucks.

they also make a KILLER effects "pod" i've actually considered trading one of my guitars to a buddy for his, if i didnt love my danelectro so much i would. http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-LIN-PODXT-LIST, nice but my hodad is just unusual enough here that i wont give it up

the vox vt series emulates the ac series pretty well. Read up on it's tube preamp shizzle. Pretty amazing. They make a vt50, which is a single speaker, 50 watt version. Very inexpensive.
No.

Well,
Ben is happy. Ive been to the shop looked at some amps. I tried a roland cube 30x cosm. It is a fantastic amp!!! Here is a description. http://www.roland.co.uk/guitar_room_catdet.asp?ID=CUBE30X
It looks very small on that picture, it is actually quite small, but you will be surprised how loud it goes. One great amp.
Ben ;)
p.s; as you can see im no great for describing amps in detail.

Try a Fender Super Champ XD. It is a 15watt Class AB tube amp with built in effects. I think it sounds pretty darn good. Should have enough juice for a small gig, anything large the amps are mic'd anyway. What kind of music do you play, what kind of sound are you looking for?
If you are a DIY guy there are several sites on building tube amps.

http://zvexamps.com/ (not DIY)

If you can swing a tube amp, go for it. they sound better than solid state.

No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

Ben...
MATAMP
MATAMP
MATAMP

Not cheap. Made in England. Awesome sound.
I have the Minimat - 4 Watts of pure valve heaven. - Yes 4 whole Watts!
Not a very "clean" amp but shines with some gain
But
You can get that knee-weakening valve tone at volumes that
won't... Send you deaf in your bedroom
won't... Drive your parent crazy(ier)
won't annoy the C#@p out of your neighbours

will... make you want to play, play, play
will... make you guitar sound great
will... give you Tone, Tone, Tone

It won't give you Fender tone but it will give you TONE

They make a 25 Watt head that i will get when i need a gigging amp

TONE not VOLUME for me every time
CB750 K1 - undergoing restoration (on hold)
CB750 K2 - Wanted - More time to work on her
CB1300S - the most awesome bike i've owned yet
Z1000 1977 - Wanted - a head in rebuildable condition

Check these out guys, these are some awesome hand wired amps and there is piles of info on the web about these amps. Nick the guy that makes them is very easy going and great to talk too, he will do any mod that you want as long as you can give him the correct info and they are all well priced. I am a member of a couple of guitar forums as i collect buy and sell guitars as a hobby and can guarantee these amps are the bee's knees. You can also buy them in any stage of construction you want which is also a great idea. The Marshall replicas he makes are better than the amps they copy, mine is a JCM 800 2203 model 100 watter and it is awesome. Highly recommended. His 18 watt models are killer as well.

Benly-Ben,
I missed the bit about you picking up a Roland Cube
For the money there's very few that can match it and it sounds like a great choice for where you're at.

Play the @rse off it mate!

I wish i'd started playing at your age...

Hey Retro,
I'm checking out the CeriaTone website - looks interesting.
It has been bookmarked for further investigation

I'm still waiting to hear if i can score a vintage Maton amp but the trail has gone cold
So i'm still looking at options

Of course the Ulbrick amps are calling me too...
