Do you clear coat over the decal or vice versa?

I was talkin to a couple buddies about just that the other day.  Both did the clear coat over the decal approach.

I guess you could do both too though...

I would.  It seems to me that it would have a better chance of staying on.  The other side of that is that you had better be happy with the decal as it would be difficult to remove it from under the clear coat.

I've done it two different ways before, but both ended with at least a couple of coats of clear over the decals. 

The first way was to put the decals on the base color coat and then clear over them.  The second way was to put the decals on the first coat of clear and then a couple more coats of clear over them.  Both ways worked out well.  You need the clear over the decals to protect them from gas spills and the elements.
