Do I need this screw?
« on: September 27, 2009, 01:47:59 PM »
OK so I rebuilt my 71 CB750 caliper and replaced the pads. Looking at the ones I'd replaced yesterday I noticed the screw on the pad from the piston side of the caliper. The replacements pads did not have the screw so I overlooked it. What's it for? I'm thinking to keep the pad from rotating but WDIK? Is it essential I open it up and put the screw in?

There should not be any screws in your brake caliper

This is the screw I'm talking about. It was in the pad when I removed and replaced it.

I would agree, keeps the pad from rotating around.

just take the screw out of the old pads and put it in the new ones. That's what I did.

Sure I can do that. The question is do I need to? Frankly so far it doesn't appear to be affecting anything.

Never seen a screw in a pad like that before - does it fit into a recess on the piston side ??

Yes.

Personally I'd replace it.

Well this could be another one of those obscure changes made to the early bikes and not documented. The exploded view in the parts manual makes no mention of it. I'll replace it but after just rebuilding the caliper and finally getting rid of my squeal using the dow corning and caliper assembly greese, it's completely quiet now so I hate to have to pull it apart again so that's why the question.
