IDIOT ?
« on: September 27, 2009, 09:07:27 AM »
I took my front wheel, fender, brake caliper and forks off.  I cleaned everything up and put a new tire on.  I didn't take any pictures while I did this and and stumpped.  I got the forks back on and when I attempt to put the wheel on the forks are about 1/4 inch to narrow, it wont line up with the axle.  I have taken the axel out to check if the little tabs for the speedometer are liined up, which they were, tighten it and it still wont line up.  Also I don't remember the order to put them back.
Any help would be appreciated ???

Do the fork oil drain plugs belong in the front or back?  Mine are in the back

I'm trying to get what you are doing here since you still didn't take any pictures, apparently.  :D  So, you say the forks are now 1/4 closer to each other than before? Are you sure you put the correct fork on each side? Yes, the oil plug should be to the back. The fender holes should be to the inside.
Did you put the axle in from the right (if you were sitting on bike, it is the right) and then the nut on the left? We actually had a mechanic try to put it in backwards and tell us it was correct. It didn't fit at all and was sticking out kinda weird and wouldn't tighten up right. We ended up walking into his shop, grabbed his bike jack and did it ourselves right in front of him. Jackass.  ::)

Go look on bikebandit's parts fiche to see if you are missing something. http://www.bikebandit.com/honda-motorcycle-parts/oem-parts

good luck. :)

Sounds like fork tubes may be bent?
They will fit either side, just means calipers are behind instead of in front of forks (and drain bolts end up in 'high' spot)

Did you put the cylindrical nut, (that sits on the axle, holding the axle in the wheel)  back on the right way round ?

Quick test for bent forks:
loosen one side so you can turn it, but not so it drops.
Then tape a pen/stick/ruler (only one) to the other fork in the axle hole so it just about touches the other fork, then slowly turn the loose fork & observe the gap at the pointer. If it changes its bent.
Then you either strip, and fix/replace, or move the forks so that the bends are forwatd, then use it..

This is how the axle is positioned.

This shows how the forks do not line up properly

You are missing the axle spacer that sits inside the axle nut...

Looks to me the spacer is on there and in the correct position. The spacer is located next to the of the nut in his upper and lower pic. What happens if you loosen the upper fork tubes in the tree and spin them? Will you create a wider gap? If so then the tubes may be bent...give it a look.

I'll put my glasses back on -thanks

If the left fork is not moveable - and there is no "play", then the fork tube could be bent, or the top triple clamp and steering is out of whack somewhere..

I would loosen it all up - then tighten it up in position - then tighten from the bottom up
- axle clamps
- axle
- lower clamps
- upper clamps

You could also loosen the left fork and rotate it relative to the lower leg..

Johny, answered the $1,000,000 question correctly.  i just spun the forks in the upper tree and for some reason it worked.  My only problem now is the extra wide tire, 110/90.  It is rubbing against the fender mount that holds the brake line.  Gonna try to make a gap, or return the tire.

if you spun it, and the gap changed.. You have a BENT Fork, or two..

No Maybe, it IS bent.... deal with that before saying the tire does not fit..

My 110 front tire rubbed also. Although I don't have any bent forks. I just had to bend/manipulate the fender bracket around to get clearance, its tight! Most guys that run a 110 tire I've meet don't run a front fender.
