Next step: Sledge Hammer?!
« on: May 14, 2009, 08:34:49 PM »
1977 CB550F.
I'm having some trouble. I've drilled the stake marks out with a 1/8" bit and I realize it's left hand threaded but it wont budge either way. I'm soaking in PB Blaster, and possibly try heat tomorrow. I've beat it with a wood block and ball peen hammer.

Any ideas? I'm trying this to get it out with the tool in the picture. Maybe I'll fabricate something with a wider piece of metal with four pins and a big hole in the middle for the axle to go through to keep it in place and for use with a socket. I wish I had access to welding equipment to make something proper.

Looks like you've made a great tool for removing this keeper.
Try holding the pin tool in a bench mounted vise, with pins up.
Put the wheel over the pins and turn the wheel.
you might find that you will have greater leverage and grip with this arrangement.

Good luck
Jimmy

Tap it around with a punch.

If those pins are moving out on you either replace them with some threaded bolts with a nut on the bottom side or place a plate on the top side to hold them in place.

BTW, nice looking tool!

A Honda Mechanic showed me a trick one day.

two thin screwdrivers held in holes vertically with left hand and another larger screwdriver horizontal between the two with right hand and pull like #$%*.

It works.  Banging it with a punch will make a mess.  The tool you have made will sometimes work, but when that fails try my advice ;D

I tried this first, but bent, and then broke the bolts off.

I've seen the other tools whilst using the search funtion. I really like Terry's tool, but it wont work with the 1977 550f rear wheel retainer. I also was checking out MCRider's earlier. I'll try it. I'll try anything.

Going to try it again with my tool after the overnight PB soak. I might actually try with clevis pins that have the line of holes on it like this so I can pin it in place.

I just walked through this the other day. I made a tool like yours, but I put a long bolt through the center of the hub so it would hold everythign snug while I hit the end of the bar with a hammer. Mine was also LH thread.

Once I cracked it open, it came out pretty easy. I don't think I could have broken it free without some impact.

Try tapping it tighter as well...

Sometimes just that smidgen of tightening will break things free.....

Thanks guys.

Success is sweet. Walking away for a while helps. Then I got the other clevis pins and tapped tighter and used a little more impact.

Voila!

Ensure the there is only a little bit of the pin sticking out or else they will start to bend. Unless yours comes out easy.

Well done.  Nice job on the tool, too.
