74 cb750 k4 overcharging!
« on: May 16, 2009, 09:21:59 PM »
Hello, I recently bought a 74 cb750. After cleaning the carbs and getting the bike running I noticed that the new battery I put in was not charging while running and kept dying. I checked the voltage at the battery terminals while running and it reads about 16v at 1300 rpm and up to 18-19v if I rev it. Is it the rectifier, regulator? Any tips would be appreciated.

Wow - that's unusual.  I'm trying to think what the default state of a voltage regulator is but even flat out, the charging system on these bikes near idle generally won't overcharge.  I'm thinking that if the voltage regulator stops operating, it's "failure mode" is to charge more / not less.  That could partially explain over-charging but I'm still puzzled.  It seems too high.

A failed rectifier will not cause higher voltage (it will cause less).

There are two things I'm curious about.  Do you have another meter you can check with (second electrical opinion ;))?  Other than that, I'm wondering if you have a modified alternator...  People have talked about getting parts of their alternator re-wound to make them operate better.  These systems are adequate for the bikes but as soon as you start adding additional load (bigger coils, accessories) or the system weakens with bad connections (common), they become less than adequate.

first thing i would do is hook up that volt meter to your car and see what voltage it reads on that...should be around 12.4 when car is off and between 13.8 and 14.2 when running....that's just to check how "off" that volt meter is.....
Marti, I want you to know, I like you an awful lot, but guys have said far less and left wearing their drinks on their shirts.

i had the same problem.

you're boiling the battery

start going thru all the electrical connections and cleaning them.
check especially those near the battery, there's a bunch.
check the ignition switch & key switch.
clean them all out & spray on some deoxit
check the voltages again.

if you need to replace the voltage regulator then check out these:

You can't get an accurate reading with any meter if the battery does not have a full charge. Charge the battery and try it again.

I have an after market headlight that I believe will solve your problems ;D

Since disconnecting it, my bike always starts now ::)

well i tested the voltmeter, and it's fine. as far as connections, I pretty much cleaned all of them, except the ones in the headlight case, but all electrical switches work fine, could a faulty regulator cause this?
