led turn signal stalk mod
« on: July 26, 2010, 11:38:06 AM »
If anyone has bought a cheap set of blinkers for use on their bike in stock location, then this is the mod for you.

The first and second pic shows the lights I am talking about.  The third shows the problem: the stalk is too short to mount correctly.  The fourth pic shows what you will need to get at the hardware store.  These are for mounting fans and lights.  It is hollow allthread for lack of a better description. The final pic shows the first step of the process: remove the screw on the back of the shaft of the light and remove the black covering on the wires.

1st pic: pull out the black body contents to remove light from housing.
2nd pic: pull out screw to remove from black body.
3rd pic: choose length of nipple you want to use. I used the 3rd from the ends which was 1 1/2" long. then screw one nut on.
4th pic: place it in the same position as the other bolt was.
5th pic: Here it is in the position you want.  follow next step to wedge it in the body.

1st pic: screw the nipple in until it touches the body toward your left.  This will snug it in the body so it won't be wobbly.
2nd pic: install the wires back the way they came out and install the bulb.  also install the black part of the body that was removed earlier.
3rd pic: use this hardware that came with your light and another nut that fits your new nipple, and install on bike.
4th pic: both lights done and installed in stock location.  These will be painted black but gives you an idea what they look like.  These directions go for all of the lights that are shaped like these on ebay.  There are chrome, black, and carbon fiber ones.  I got these really cheap!
5th pic:  I found this when I pulled apart the 3rd light in my set of four.  It looks like they welded a nut to a nipple at the factory.

Thanks for that! I bot a set of those lights from eBay as well, and was miffed when I got them. Very shiny which I like, but plastic, which is OK. But the mount had me baffled, so I threw them in my resell on eBay box. Now I may keep them.

Excellent tip! I stumbled across is searching through some projects I'll be doing, and this one is awesome. I bought a pair of eBay lights a couple of months ago, and now I can use them!
