needle clip position? float adjustment?
« on: July 05, 2009, 07:09:30 PM »
so, I searched and found no pictures or understandable desriptions on how to do this. I have pipes and pods on my '75 cb550. I just swapped in 115 main jets, and went for a spin. drastically improved WOT running, however i feel some flat spots here and there which I assume I can take care of with fiddleing with the adjustment screws and a sychronization. I however have fuel flowing rather freely from the overflows at idle, and consistantly. I beleive I need to adjust the float setting and change the clip setting for the needle, but could not figure out how to do this. any tips? pics would be STUPENDOUS.

thanks in advance.

so, i figured out float adjustment, and set them to 22mm. I dont beleive I have the clip type needle jets, as I have threaded ones If the jets I'm thinking they are, are in fact the needle jets. Adjusting the floats helped, and I set my adjustment screws to 2&1/2 turns out. Bike runs like a raped ape at full throttle, but hunts in the midrange and dumps fuel out of the overflows at idle.

I assume I shall be hunting for a larger size needle jet, but have no idea what the stock size is to bump up from, or what to bump up TO.

any ideas fellas?

Have you cleaned the carbs? Some junk may have gotten in the needle valve and that's why you're overflowing. Or the floats are installed wrong or not floating or sticking.

You'll want to raise the needle 1 spot (lowering the clip) and see how it runs from there. Only do 1 adjustment at a time.

this fits right with what I have read, but i cannot figure out where or how to do this. I feel I am missing something very simple haha.

where is this located?

and I have clarified for myself that the other jet in there is the pilot jet or slow jet, which Im thinking I also need to enlarge, but dont know what the stock size is for '75/'76, nor do I know what size to change to for pods and pipes with a 115 main jet.

You can usually get away with leaving the stock slow jet in there and adjusting the air screw to compensate.

For the needles, you'll need to access them from the top of the carbs. Im not familiar with the CB500, but there should be someway to loosen the slides and pull out the needles from the top.
