77 CB750F - stock box or pods/ jets
« on: October 09, 2007, 01:00:08 PM »
I've tried posting several other sites, need some expertise. I have a stock 77 CB750F. Bikes runs good, real good. Have not had chance to really get on, however - what does majority say: Stock Air Box/ setup or Pods and jets for more speed/ power? Any suggestions on the later. Obviously the least amount of hassle. Not money so much.

well it is kind of a false assumption that jets/pods will give you more power without other mods. You really ought to use the search function before asking a question whose answer is liable to go on for months.

Personally I find the best setup to be a K&N reusable free flowing filter in the stock airbox works the best for otherwise stock bikes. This is also the least amount of hassle since it is abotu the same amoutn of work as replacing a stock air filter and doesn't usually require a jet change.

If you really want to go pods, then at least get the real K&N reusable pods and not the cheap emgo pieces of crap.

Getting a smooth transition from circuit to circuit with pods can be a trial.
And, as Hondaman has stated, pods can cause turbulence at certain RPMS, no matter how spot-on your jetting.
The stock airbox has built in velocity stacks. Most peopel will tell you "If it runs good, leave it alone.."
Also, some people have said that just going with a high flow filter in the stock airbox will net you the same gains as pods, without the downside of pod turbulence.
Still will have to rejet, but probably no more than half a size up, unless you make other breathing mods to the bike.
(I have to run 125's with pods and only a tiny increase in exhaust flow.)

p.s. by the way, i'm currently working on a design to replace the stock airbox, with something that is actually an upgrade. http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=26342.msg271600#msg271600

The amout you will gain with pods probably isn't worth the hassel. I put pods on my 78 750k but my airbox was scrap(plus I wanted the look - not necessarily a perforemance gain) when I got the bike so it was cheaper for me to go with pods. In your case if it's not broke don't fix it IMO.
