77 400F Gas Mileage?
« on: May 18, 2009, 09:09:12 PM »
Hey all,

This is my first post I have just picked up a 1977 CB400F.  I finally burned through a tank of gas and got about 35 mpg.  That seems ridiculously low-- or maybe not.  I ride it HARD and did about 20 miles with the lady-friend on the back at no less than 7000 RPM.  The bike runs well, pulls hard and isn't fouling plugs so what gives?  I was expecting at least 50 mpg.  Is it possible to flog these bikes hard enough to get 35 mpg without fouling plugs or blowing a black smoke screen?  It does leave quite a bit of fuel droplets on your hand if you put it in front of the exhaust pipe and give it a good rev.

I just sold a 1979 Yamaha xs650 that got 55 mpg no matter what.

This bike is too much fun to baby so if it gets 35 mpg, it gets 35 mpg-- well worth it for the smile factor.

Thoughts?

Sean
