Oil leak from???
« on: November 01, 2005, 07:57:20 AM »
Nice day today here in the UK so I went for a 30+ mile ride, reached top speed of 80 mph very briefly, but mostly max 65 mph.
Problem is: when I looked at my left boot(bridge of foot area) there were visible signs of oil on it. There does not appear to be any oil dripping when stationary.
I have just changed, oil & oil filter and plugs. The bike seems to be running well.
Any ideas?

There are a couple of sources. First could be the shifter seal. It leaks and some oil finds its way down the shifter arm and on to your shoe. Try wiping under the shifter arm with a paper towel after a ride and the bike has been sitting overnight. The other is possibly a leaking alternator gasket. I have both issues myself and hope to tackle them this winter.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Bob,
Cheers, there doesn't appear to be any oil coming from the shifter area. I think that the high-ish  speed may be relevant in this mystery, as this has not happened before?
Jim.

Do you notice any oil around the filter area or the fins ?
Clean off all of the oil  then spray the motor with some white athletes foot powder in a can.Take it for a ride and after that you`ll be able to see where the oil is originating from by following the telltale tracks of the oil in the powder ;)

Great idea;  no sign of any oil on the fins or around the filter cover.
Btw, how is your athletes foot?  :)  Would talcum powder work the same ;)

Me , an athlete ? Ha !
My soccer days are over , hip and knee replacement following a bad bike wreck :-\

The spray on powder works better because it will still stick at speed.

Sorry to hear that, at least you survived to tell the tale!
I will try that powder trick tomorrow, if it is dry!  ;)

May sound stupid, but have you checked the LH front fork seal.

Cheers mate, I would not have even thought of checking that.
