Hi, I just pick up a 1977 CB 550. Heres the problem I have. The pervious owner does not have a title for it. Dont worry the bike is not stolen, I had the VIN checked. What years and models of CBs is the frame the same. I am trying to get a frame and title so any info would be great. Also if any one has one for sale that would be better. Thanks all.

Pretty sure all years of the 500's and 550's had more or less the same frame...

but i would do some research to make sure exactly what you need to ge the bike titled in your name.

What's the process in US/Canada?
Here in NZ if the bike is not on the Police "hot sheets" and no finance company can prove a lien on it then getting it re Vinned is pretty simple, costs me $370 odd bucks and I'm legal with 6 months reg and a wof.
There has to be a better way than buying "titled" frames and stripping all the gear of a bike unnesseccarily surely?

Why bother with a new frame? You can get a title from ITS titles. ~$200 if I remember correctly. Cheaper and easier than swapping out a frame...

One other way is to sell it to a trusted friend in another state where he can register it, then sell it back to you...with documentation, then you'll be able to title it in your name. In Ma they require titles, in NH they don't....

On the other hand, I've been to the RMV and been told no to certain questions...walked out and driven to the next nearest RMV location and been told yes.
A bill of sale might be all you need if you get called to the right window...

What state or country are you in? Makes all the difference.

Thanks for the E-Bay Links. Thats where I started looking first. No titles with the frames listed so far.

Have you used ITS or know of anyone that has? I checked out the site. Look like they register the bike for you but I did not see any info on a proper title in the process.

That might work. There is a Honda Nashua sticker on the bike. I might be able to go to the RMV with a bill of sale and get it taken care of since the bike was originally from NH. I will call the RMV this week and get a little more info. Lastnight I spoke to a friend and they said that they believe that the bike might be old enough that a title was not issued.

You'll need a MA title for it if you're gonna register it here, my 750K3 is titled. I don't think this state cares how old your vehicle is, they want the money anyway.

What state is the seller listed in the bill of sale located in?

Bill of sale is MA. The owner of the bike is in living in CA now, He cannot find the title or registration for it. He had not rode the bike in 15 years. It was left at his moms house here in MA and she wanted it gone. She was going to cut it up but I could not let that happen. The bike needs alot of work and I dont want to put money into it until I have a title for it.

The RMV always wants thier money. lol

The PO should be able to file for a lost title then.

I have 2 classic cars that didn't come with a bill of sale or title ...I phoned the registration office and asked them how that has to work and she told me to give them the serial number etc. and they would do a back ground check to see if there was theft or a lien on it.....if not I could just re=register it under my name for no extra cost......
