Well, I was attempting to fine tune the clutch on my 550 yesterday when I ran into a problem. I put some slack into the cable with the lever adjuster and the two nuts at the frame then I loosened the lock nut on the clutch cover. Inserted my flathead screw driver, attempted to turn and quickly heard two "snaps". The two pieces fell to the floor and I knew I was in trouble.
Questions:
The remaining part of the screw turns free but I'm baffled as to why they would snap off. Is this a common occurence on these bikes? I'm thinking no since I haven't been able to find one other instance on these forums with the search feature. Should I be concerned that this happened? I have been having a very difficult time adjusting my clutch properly but when I took it apart before I had the bike running everything looked perfect inside the case including all of the actuator parts.
Also, am I relegated to finding this exact Honda part only? The part from Honda is available with the whole actuator arm which is about $40. It seems all I need is that double notched screw, anyone think I would be able to fabricate one with a stock screw with just a dremel?
I'm going to pull the cover off again to look inside and since I will have to anyway in order to repair this. I think I'm also going to pull the oil pan while I'm at it just to see what I find in there.
Also, a possibly unrelated second question. I noticed that when I enter a curve to the right and have the bike leaned over to the right I hear a metallic tinny noise coming from what seems to be the lower right side of the engine/trans. It sounds as if a bunch of metal discs are on some sort of shaft and slapping against each other. Almost like if you were to put some thin metal plates/discs on your wrist and shake your arm around. Any idea what this could be?
Thanks
RJ
