What front wheel is this?
« on: May 13, 2009, 11:34:10 PM »
So I got this bike a few months ago and I'm trying to fix it up. As far as I know it has a '74 750k frame and a '78 750 engine. I bought an original speedo and a speedo gear for a '74. The problem is the front wheel isn't original... It has two disk brakes (only one hooked up). I'm trying to find out what this wheel came off of so I can get the right speedo gear for it. Let me know if any of you know what it might be or how I can find out. Thanks for your time.

Mini rant: This bike has been nothing but trouble and I'm starting to get frustrated. I had to get new rings, new valves, guides, etc., a new cam chain tensioner and roller, get the head machined, and it's still giving me trouble. Smokes when it get's hot, oil pressure drops, and barely shifts when hot. It had no horn, turn signals, speedo, tach or registration. It cost me more than the bike itself to fix it up and it's still not running right. That's what I get for going from a stolen moped to a 750 without doing my research. Oh well, you live and you learn.

oil pressure will be higher cold, than warmed up.

 Is it 750cc or bigbore.?

Shifting problems could be cutch adjustment, by look of the bike it may have a Barnett or other clutch. A bit crankier than stock, but grab better.

 Bike looks good though.

1976 GL1000? Well the rearsets are Tarozzi's and were made to do 1 up 4 down. I might just need to adjust the clutch. and the oil pressure drops to 20 when hot and smoke starts to come out of the exhaust... Thanks for the info though, I'll look into the dual disk add on. This is my first motorcycle but I'm pretty quick at learning.

some close ups. So it looks like the wheel is on backwards too... If I can get it to mount do you think it's possible to not only mount a speedo gear on the wrong side, but also use an original speedo gear from my '74 750 frame? What a pain... The rotor is a little thicker on the side that's not being used I think that's why it's on that way.

maybe. Make me an offer... It's going to be a #$%* to get the right wheel with a good tire though.

If the front hub is ribbed its probably a 76 or down 750 part.

Alright besides the reactionary "Your having a lot of trouble with your bike so I will buy it off you" response...

What are you plans with for the bike? Did you buy it to turn around or ride? I know its cliche but there have been times where I was so frustrated and 2 seconds away from dumping the bike off of a cliff... Just sayin' The more you go through a bike the better it will be.

As for the price, its an untitled/unregistered bike so don't get insulted when I offer parts bike prices, where are you?

oh, I thought you meant the wheel. I'm keeping the bike. I've already invested to much to let it go. I would loose too much. Thank for the offer though.

Helicoil the speedo side of the hub and use flat head allen heads.....plenty of room for the drive then. You will to countersink the disc carrier for those bolts too.

thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to get the unused rotor machined down before I turn the wheel around because it's thicker (unless I can pry the brake pads far enough apart). Also I tried fitting the speedo drive I have onto the axle and the axle is to wide to accept the drive. I'm guessing it has a different forks than the original to accept the larger axle? Looks like this is going to be a whole new project. I'm guessing I'll need a drive made for a GL1000 unless I can bore out the inside of my current drive (bad idea?). Thanks again for all of your help. It's nice that there's a community of people out there willing to help each other out.

so I should remove the rotors and switch them? Also, I don't think there's a spacer, I'm pretty sure the axle is just thicker (doesn't make sense because if I have the stock forks it would be too thick). I don't know. I don't have a good jack yet so I'll have to figure that out so I can really get in there and mess with it to see what's up. I'll look for that thread too.

Jack.. if the bike has a cetrestand, put bocks under the front of motor, if not, put bocks under each side of the frame.

There's a brass thing on the speedo side that looked like a spacer to me but when I had the wheel off I couldn't get it to budge...

and as you can see in the photo the axle fits perfectly on the forks but the speedo gear won't fit onto the axle, so I need a GL gear right? It wasn't to clear for me in the post addressing it.

If there is a spacer between the fork and wheel, it probably has to come off and be switched with the speedo drive.
Not sure if speedo drive goes against wide end of axle, but I know the stock spacer fits into the side of the wheel with the seal.

Get a manual or clear exploded view, sounds like you are not familiar with what goes where.
