Hah Terry, I think it's funny you managed to include "EPA laws in the US" and "covered in soot" in the same post.  You're right about the EPA limits on the bike... the pilot screws used to have a flange that only allowed a 7/8 turn counterclockwise (and THAT's making it leaner!).  Stupid environment!  Fortunately I have a Keyster screw installed now, which has no flange.  Hooray for backdoor solutions!

I have the carbs back on the bike, and it runs smooth from idle to 3k, then boggy/sluggish beyond that unless I run the throttle hard(in which case I get GREAT response).  It's really acting like it's lean now.  Question is, if there's no adjustment for me to screw up, then what in the world is making this bike run lean?  My only other avenue would be the pilot screws, which I have yet to play with, and re-synch the carbs.  Opinions?

with pods it is most likely too lean...

Untill you find out if you are actually running rich/lean you are just guessing...dont bother floundering around any longer...do what needed to be done in the first place...

DO A PLUG CHOP!

cv carbs can be weird, but k-n makes some upgrade kits that include different springs, needles, drill bits to get at epa hidden screws, and they have jets everwhere. even on the back where the filter  attachs. stock kits are just pissing in the wind. when installations are done right, these carbs come to life ;)

Buffo, what's the point of doing a plug chop if I can't adjust the carbs to properly FIX the problem!

I know it's bogging a bit from around 1/3 throttle to around 2/3 throttle.  Idle is fine, 1/8-1/4 is fine, and wide open is fine.  I know it's the middle range, which probably means something is going on with the vacuum pistons and the floats/needle.  But WHAT can I do to fix it?  I can't adjust the float height, and I can't adjust the needle height!

And I'm no longer running pods... I've got a stock airbox with stock jets and stock pipes.  Could it have something to do with the tiny differences between an SC engine with STD carbs?  I didn't think there was any difference except the paint and a small issue with gearing.

I just thought of an experience. make sure slide vacuum rubber(very top,4 screws) are all in good shape. I had a rubber bust one time. ??? :o

for one a plug chop is the first thing you do if you even think you are running rich or lean....PLEASE...ANYONE...IF I AM WRONG TELL ME!

you can adjust your carbs...I dont have your carbs but I have a K8 and I have pressed in jets (pilot) and I tapped in screw in jets of a bigger size...I have single slotted main needles and I am experimenting with the older style with 5 slots...do what you can

there are things you can do but you have to set a base line first...AND AS YOU CORRECT/TRY DIFFERENT THINGS DO CHOPS AS YOU GO SO YOU CAN SEE IF WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS WORKING OR MAKING THINGS WORSE...

sync your carbs...
make sure everything is timed correctly...
do a plug chop at: Idle, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full throttle...you could be running rich at idle and lean at other settings...

my point is do what needs to be done to move ahead in the proper direction...dont just say..."I know I am lean"...where on the thottle are you the leanest...(that you have proof of and not just a guess)

cv carbs can be weird, but k-n makes some upgrade kits that include different springs, needles, drill bits to get at epa hidden screws, and they have jets everwhere. even on the back where the filter attachs. stock kits are just pissing in the wind. when installations are done right, these carbs come to life ;)

why not buy some of the stuff CD mentioned?

if you are unwilling to investagate the things that are mentioned by the people in here why are you asking questions?

you could always spray 6 cans of carb cleaner in the carb mouths...walk around your bike 6 times...kick the tires 3 or 4 times apiece and swear at it a bunch...it might start to run right...

I think ol' Buffy's a bit "tired and emotional" this weekend, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

If I had money, I would go out and buy every tool and mod there was for this bike.  Unfortunately, I'm a broke college kid who is under the constant threat of being laid off from a #$%*ty job.  Damn you corporate America!

What I'm wanting to do is figure out how to make the bike run like it did when it came out of the factory.  You're right Buffo, I've been dragging my feet on the plug chop issue.  I've never done it before and that makes me nervous.  I'll see what turns out when I finally force myself around to it.

Ha ha, I'll take that as a compliment mate, I spent many years head-butting people's fists to get a head like this, but I always made sure they looked worse than me by the end of the activity, if only temporarily, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
