Motad baffles?
« on: November 01, 2005, 09:55:33 AM »
Has anyone had experience of drilling holes in the baffle plate of a Motad silencer? I want to get a better note from the bike and I did not want to replace the silencer to do this.

Yep, saw this done several times, problem was i had to fail every one of em on mot as they had been "modified to give extra noise" or at least i think that was the wording in the mot manual, also had one VERY pissed off owner who when he tried to remonstrate with me that his exhaust has a BS number on it i carefully pointed out that it was the wrong BS number and related to the quality of chrome not the silencing--NOT a Motad I hasten to addd
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Good point. My bike has just passed the MOT, but I wonder if the guy had seen holes drilled whether he might have failed it? Is the noise test done purely by ear, or do they use a noise test machine?

My 550K3 has no baffles in either right hand silencer and sounds wierd (you know Jim - you've ridden it!)

When it was MOT'd, the guy wasn't bothered as he said it was still quieter than some modern "street" cans.

No way my rusted baffles could be seen as "modified for extra noise" though!

But I suppose if you had removed the rusted baffles, that could be seen as modified for extra noise?
Btw, I like the noise your 550 makes.

Yes I guess so. My exhausts look standard from the outside (no drill holes anyway!) but are empty!

I am hoping the drill holes will darken with soot and not be visible. I must say the MOT guy that I went to barely gave the bike a cursory glance when he passed it.
